Lead
About the role
- Acting on Value of Information
- Turn NOUS's ranked survey blocks into survey designs: line spacing, line direction, altitude and tie lines
- Work with the NOUS team on when a block needs re-flying and how field constraints should affect its score
- Mission & Path Planning
- Plan terrain-following survey missions around real constraints: endurance, battery swaps, terrain, airspace and sensor geometry
- Use or build on survey planning tools such as UgCS and the autopilot's native mission format
- Command & Coordinate Generation
- Convert CARTA block geometries into executable waypoints and sensor triggers (lat, lon, alt)
- Own the coordinate-frame and geodesy work that aligns model space with the real world
- Sensor Integration
- Integrate geophysical and geochemical sensors onto our aerial and ground platforms, starting with the magnetometer and adding instruments like portable XRFHandle each sensor's mounting, power, timing, logging and calibration, and build its data path into NOUSSurvey Data Processing
- Process drone magnetics: remove platform noise, apply base-station diurnal corrections, level flight lines and grid the result
- Run in-field QC so bad lines are re-flown before the crew leaves site
- Systems Integration & Autonomy StackMake CARTA, NOUS, PX4/ArduPilot controllers and sensing payloads interoperate over ROS2 and MAVLinkAutomate the full loop from a NOUS recommendation to processed data back in NOUSSimulation & Field Deployment
- Validate missions in simulation against synthetic ground, then deploy and test on real hardware
- Fly multi-week field campaigns, starting on the Arabian Shield, including field repairs and payload swaps
- Core experience
- Planned, flown, and processed real drone survey missions
- Wrote the software that connects mission planning, flight, and data processing
- Informative path planning or adaptive sampling
- UgCSIntegrating sensors onto drones or robots
- Strong in Python and geospatial data
- Enough statistics to interpret a Bayesian model's value-of-information output and push back on survey design (you won't need to build the model). Not required
- Reinforcement learning.
- GPS-denied navigation.
- Knowledge of geophysical and geochemical instruments (you'll learn these here).
- Where you might come from
- Field robotics or adaptive-sampling labs (e.g., CMU, MIT–WHOI, Stanford).Autonomous science groups (e.g., NASA JPL).Drone geophysics or unexploded-ordnance (UXO) survey firms.
- Robotics or drone startups in the defense or resource monitoring space.
- Mission fit
- A strong passion for working on problems that matter at a national and civilizational scale. This counts as much as technical depth.
- A flexible thinker, willing to adapt and evolve as the boundary conditions do. Someone who is ready to join a tight nit team and build something at the cutting edge.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
