Job TitleLOCATION: Special Education – Multiple LocationsBASIC FUNCTION: The work involves facilitating the translation of verbal communication for deaf/hard-of-hearing students. An incumbent is responsible for interpreting presentations, instructions, and assignments in a variety of settings, both sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign. Direct supervision is received from the assigned school district or BOCES supervisor. Does related work as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Receives verbal communication and interprets for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing. Receives sign language communication from students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing. Provides fluent American Sign Language interpretation for seminars, classes, examinations, meetings, conferences, etc. Thorough knowledge of American Sign Language. Thorough knowledge of the English language. Good knowledge of the communication problems confronting the deaf/hard-of-hearing population within mainstream environments. Skill in sign language. Skill in receptive, expressive, and reverse interpreting. Ability to facilitate the successful completion of the communication process for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing. Ability to understand verbal communication and express this communication to the deaf/hard-of-hearing using motor communication skills. Ability to understand and express both verbal and manual language. Ability to define abstract ideas into understandable manual language. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Patience, endurance, professionalism and sound judgment. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
SALARY: BOCES employee salary commensurate with experience and in accordance with contract language.
