Position Overview: County Counsel Paralegal – Confidential (Paralegal I or II) provides paraprofessional legal support under close or general supervision of attorney staff for the County Counsel office, including legal research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, and assisting with civil and legislative matters. Salary Paralegal I‑Confidential: $4,309 – $5,500 approximate monthly, $24.86 – $31.73 approximate hourly. Paralegal II‑Confidential: $4,774 – $6,093 approximate monthly, $27.54 – $35.15 approximate hourly.
Essential Duties: Paralegal services for County Counsel and attorney staff; researching legal issues and reviewing statutes, ordinances, case law, and legal articles; drafting pleadings, briefs, appeals, petitions, complaints, answers, and declarations; reviewing and summarizing deposition and hearing transcripts; drafting ordinances, resolutions, leases, contracts, and amendments; providing technical support for civil law projects such as codification of County ordinances; preparing public hearing notices; calendaring and tracking real estate transactions; assisting with legislative tracking and history reports; coordinating schedules and meetings; organizing litigation and non‑litigation files; maintaining document control; appearing in court in a support capacity; and performing related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Knowledge of: legal research methods, civil procedure, legal writing, court processes, document drafting, office methods, computer applications, proper English usage, and training/supervision principles. Ability to: maintain confidentiality, follow complex directions, gather information and prepare reports, research and apply legal principles, organize large amounts of data, communicate orally and in writing, draft legal documents, adopt effective courses of action, exercise sound judgment, manage workload, operate personal computers, maintain cooperative relationships, and follow safety policies.
Minimum Qualifications: Paralegal I‑Confidential: Two (2) years of secretarial or clerical office support experience preparing a variety of legal documents in a public or private law practice. Paralegal II‑Confidential: Two (2) years of paralegal experience comparable to a Paralegal I‑Confidential with Shasta County.
Special Requirements: A paralegal must possess at least one of the following: Certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association. Certificate of completion of a paralegal program or degree at a postsecondary institution with at least 24 semester units in law‑related courses, accredited, or approved by the Bureau. Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in any subject, plus at least one (1) year of law‑related experience under a supervising attorney in California for at least the preceding three (3) years. High school diploma or GED, plus at least three (3) years of law‑related experience under a supervising attorney in California for at least the preceding three (3) years (experience completed no later than December 31, 2003). Incumbents must also comply with the mandatory continuing education requirements defined by the California Business and Professions Code. Physical Demands and Work Environment Regularly required to sit, use hands, talk or hear, reach, and occasionally stand, walk, climb, lift up to 10 pounds and sometimes up to 25 pounds. Work is primarily office‑based with occasional court travel and occasional exposure to outside weather.
