About the role
General Summary of Position:
The Temporary Researcher (PhD) will support research and development activities related to point-of-care diagnostic technologies. The position will assist with experimental design, assay development and optimization, data collection and analysis, troubleshooting, and documentation of research findings. This temporary, non-benefited staff part-time appointment will support project-specific research needs for a defined 9-month period.
Minimum Qualifications:
(Required): A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field is required. The candidate must have experience conducting laboratory research, designing and troubleshooting experiments, analyzing scientific data, maintaining accurate research records, and working independently and collaboratively in a laboratory environment. Additional Considerations: This is a temporary, non-benefited staff part-time position beginning May 25, 2026 and ending February 24, 2027. The appointment is project-specific and intended to provide time-limited research support for point-of-care diagnostics without creating a permanent benefited staff position. Compensation will be hourly and subject to actual hours worked and university approval.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include experience with point-of-care diagnostics, assay development, biosensors, biomarker detection, immunoassays, molecular diagnostics, microfluidics, or related bioanalytical methods. Experience working with biological or clinical samples, performing assay validation, preparing technical reports, and contributing to manuscripts, presentations, or grant-related materials is also desirable. Special Instructions to Applicants: Initial review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. However, the position may close when an adequate number of qualified applicants is received. This is a temporary, non-unit, non-benefited position. Please include a resume and cover letter with your application. Names and contact information of three references will be required during the application process. The University of Massachusetts President's Office welcomes all qualified applicants and complies with all state and federal anti-discrimination laws.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
