About the role

Mendes & Mount, LLP is actively seeking an experienced Insurance Litigation Associate to join our top-tier Litigation Department in New York City. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who is ready to take on meaningful responsibility, work directly with recognized leaders in insurance law, and develop sophisticated coverage litigation experience in a practice where insurance is a core focus. Substantive insurance coverage experience and exceptional legal writing skills are essential for this position.
What You’ll Do:
  • Represent domestic and international insurers in coverage matters and insurance coverage litigation.
  • Handle complex disputes in state and federal courts involving asbestos, environmental claims, and other high-stakes issues.
  • Draft and argue motions, prepare pleadings, manage discovery, and assist with mediation, arbitration, and trial preparation.
  • Analyze insurance policies and draft coverage opinions, recommendations, and client communications.
  • Participate in litigation strategy, including motion practice, depositions, document review, settlement, and arbitration.
  • Work directly with partners on case development and client strategy, with significant opportunities for client interaction. Why Mendes? At Mendes, you will:
  • Join a litigation team that represents major domestic and international insurers, often as lead counsel, in some of the most significant insurance disputes nationwide.
  • Work on matters spanning the U.S., London, and Bermuda insurance markets.
  • Build deep expertise at a boutique firm where insurance litigation is a primary practice area, not a secondary specialty.
  • Gain earlier client exposure and substantive litigation responsibility than is typically available at larger firms.
  • Work in a collaborative, in-person environment designed to accelerate learning and professional development.
  • Receive a competitive compensation package that includes base salary, billable-hour and discretionary bonuses, and comprehensive benefits.
What We’re Looking For:
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice in New York.
  • Three to five years of substantive insurance coverage litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in legal research, analysis, and written advocacy.
  • Experience managing multiple complex matters with initiative, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort interacting directly with clients.
  • A commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and exceptional client service.
Compensation & Benefits: Mendes offers a competitive total rewards package, including:
  • A good-faith base salary range of $150,000–$175,000 for candidates with three to five years of direct, substantive experience. Actual compensation will be based on factors including class year and the nature and depth of experience in relevant practice areas. The position is also eligible for billable-hour and discretionary bonuses.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits, with the Firm covering nearly 80% of premiums.
  • Retirement plan with profit sharing, Firm-paid bar dues and CLE expenses, and professional development resources.
  • A collegial, supportive workplace with meaningful opportunities for growth. Mendes is moving promptly in our search and welcome applications from qualified attorneys who are ready to make an immediate impact.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
