About the role
Overview:
We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area on our Core Audio team. In this role, you will provide advanced engineering expertise and technical leadership for the development of microphone, speaker, and acoustic system solutions across Garmin consumer products. You will work closely with electrical, software, acoustics and product teams to improve audio performance, develop design methodologies, and evaluate emerging technologies.
Essential Functions:
Lead the mechanical design and development of audio-related systems and components from concept through production
Design moderately to highly complex mechanical components and assemblies with a focus on audio performance, reliability, manufacturability, and environmental robustness
Knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, material requirements, material performance, material limitations, etc.
Manage design tradeoffs, determine risk mitigation plans, assess project feasibility, and provide technical input to product development plans and concept documents
Lead investigations into microphone, speaker, acoustic, and environmental performance challenges including wind, water, shock, vibration, and other operating conditions
Evaluate new technologies, competitive products, and supplier capabilities to identify opportunities for improved product performance
Drive testing, data analysis, and root-cause investigations to characterize and improve system-level performance
Provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem-solving techniques and offer process improvements and author new procedures
Develop engineering requirements, design guidance, test methodologies, and best practices that can be applied across multiple Garmin product categories
Collaborate with electrical engineering, software, industrial design, acoustics, suppliers, and manufacturing partners throughout product development
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical EngineeringANDa minimum of 5 years relevant experienceORan equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Desired Qualifications:
Experience developing consumer electronic products with challenging environmental requirements including water, wind, dust, shock, and vibration
Experience integrating microphones, speakers, sensors, antennas, or other electronic components into compact products
Experience working with electrical, software, DSP, acoustics, or industrial design teams
Experience characterizing and troubleshooting complex system-level performance through testing and data analysis
Experience defining engineering requirements, validation methods, design standards, or technical guidance
Experience evaluating competitive products, emerging technologies, and supplier capabilities
Experience with wearable devices, handheld products, communication systems, headsets, cameras, or other consumer electronics
Exposure to acoustics, microphone systems, speaker systems, voice communication products, or related technologies
