Washington, DC or New York City (Hybrid)|3+ Month Engagement|$70-$80/hr DOECherry Bekaert Recruiting & Staffing is partnering with a leading nonprofit organization to identify an experienced Tax & Compliance Consultantfor a critical project focused on regulatory compliance, IRS matters, Form 990 reporting, and governance improvements across affiliated nonprofit entities. This opportunity is ideal for a senior tax, compliance, or regulatory professional with experience navigating complex nonprofit environments, IRS correspondence, exempt organization compliance, and cross-functional governance initiatives.
Key Responsibilities: Lead the resolution of outstanding IRS notices and correspondence, ensuring complete documentation and timely closure. Review historical Form 990 filings and assess potential amendment or refiling requirements. Serve as a liaison with external tax advisors and compliance consultants. Evaluate cost-sharing arrangements and resource allocation methodologies between affiliated entities. Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit regulations and establish supporting documentation for intercompany and shared-service activities. Review existing compliance calendars and assist in remedying filing gaps or overdue regulatory requirements. Design recommendations for a centralized compliance oversight framework to strengthen organizational governance. Support preparation of upcoming Form 990 filings and create audit-ready documentation and standard operating procedures. Identify compliance risks and recommend process improvements to support long-term sustainability and regulatory adherence.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, Business, Law, or a related field.8+ years of experience in tax compliance, regulatory compliance, governance, risk management, or related functions. Strong knowledge of IRS regulations, exempt organization requirements, and Form 990 reporting. Experience resolving IRS notices, audits, examinations, or agency correspondence. Background working with nonprofit organizations, associations, NGOs, foundations, or other regulated entities strongly preferred. Experience with cost allocation methodologies, shared services arrangements, or inter-entity transactions. Ability to manage external advisors, auditors, and key stakeholders across multiple departments. Excellent analytical, documentation, and project management skills. Preferred Experience501(c)(3) and/or 501(c)(4) compliance experience. Exempt organization tax experience gained through public accounting, consulting, or in-house tax functions. Experience developing compliance frameworks, policies, or governance processes. Prior work with complex, multi-entity organizations. Engagement Details

Compensation: $70-$80/hour, with flexibility for exceptional candidates
