About the role

A growing local municipality is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineering Manager to lead traffic engineering, traffic operations, transportation planning, development review, roadway safety, and long-range mobility initiatives. This is a highly visible leadership role for a transportation professional who wants to help shape how streets, intersections, traffic signals, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and future transportation investments are planned and delivered. The Traffic Engineering Manager serves as a senior technical leader, providing oversight across traffic operations, engineering studies, development review, transportation capital projects, long-range planning, and roadway safety.
Key Responsibilities: Lead traffic engineering and traffic operations programs. Manage traffic signal systems, signal timing, and corridor operations. Analyze traffic patterns, collision data, intersection performance, and roadway conditions. Develop practical recommendations to improve safety, mobility, capacity, and overall system performance. Review traffic impact analyses, development proposals, access plans, and transportation mitigation measures. Lead or support transportation capital projects from planning through design and construction. Manage consultants, technical studies, project schedules, budgets, and engineering deliverables. Support long-range transportation planning and transportation improvement programs. Coordinate with developers, consultants, contractors, public agencies, regional partners, and community stakeholders. Ensure compliance with applicable transportation standards, MUTCD requirements, accessibility requirements, and engineering regulations. Present technical recommendations to leadership, elected officials, public agencies, developers, and community members. Mentor engineering staff and provide technical guidance on complex traffic and transportation issues. Support grant applications, transportation funding strategies, and interagency coordination.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field. Eight years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including at least five years at the professional level in traffic or transportation engineering design. Demonstrated experience in traffic engineering, transportation engineering, traffic operations, roadway design, or transportation planning. Leadership, supervisory, project-management, or technical-lead experience. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Washington, or the ability to obtain Washington registration through reciprocity within six months of hire. Valid driver’s license. Preferred Qualification Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification is highly preferred. Candidates with a PTOE designation will be especially well aligned with the technical scope of the role, including traffic operations, signal systems, intersection and corridor analysis, roadway safety, traffic studies, capacity analysis, development review, and transportation system performance. Candidates with strong traffic-engineering experience who meet the core requirements are also encouraged to apply.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
