Solid Waste Collection Driver Provides reliable, efficient, and cost-effective collection, transportation, and disposal of material. This position is responsible for providing service to residential and commercial customers and is required to be able to operate the equipment required to complete this work. Drivers will typically have an assigned route and as needed, will perform related tasks. Work is performed under the general direction of the Solid Waste Manager, Solid Waste Superintendent and Solid Waste Supervisors.
Essential Job Functions: Following successful completion of training or equivalent, operates two (2) Solid Waste vehicles, one (1) being a primary Solid Waste Collection vehicle to collect material along an assigned route within the prescribed time. Annually, completes a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of retraining to operate two (2) primary Solid Waste Collection vehicles. Ensures that assigned collection vehicle is operated safely and efficiently. Performs daily pre-trip inspections of equipment, records findings and evaluates the operational fitness of equipment. Transports collected refuse to the disposal point as often as required, and accounting for weight tickets for each trip. Reports any containers requiring service or repair, access problems, non-standard garbage accumulation, and service delivery problems timely. Performs inventory and maintenance of all special equipment (Fire Extinguishers, etc.) placed on vehicles and the proper use and operation of the communications system. Maintains communication with Solid Waste Supervisors and customer service staff. Collects all authorized material properly placed in a City owned automated container, dumpster or roll-off or Customer owned garbage container at authorized stops along the assigned route. Prevents litter due to spillage or scattering of refuse as a result of the performance of his/her duties. Resolves to not engage in any scavenging activities. Reports any accidents in which his/her vehicle is involved immediately. Maintains and cleans departmental trucks for which personal responsibility has been assigned. Washes, cleans, greases, and fuels all vehicles operated or as assigned. Provides assistance and support to all department programs which effect solid waste collection. Ensures that a public impression created by his/her appearance and performance, and that of the vehicle is professional. Operates other solid waste collection vehicles or equipment on a temporary or emergency basis. These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy trucks with hydraulic refuse packing systems. Knowledge of all factory-prescribed limits for the equipment in his/her use. Knowledge of the traffic and highway safety ordinances and regulations and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents. Ability to receive and understand oral and written orders and execute those orders effectively. Ability to manipulate a large truck and operate it efficiently. Ability to work overtime and be on call, for the efficiency of the department. Ability to maintain proper quality and quantity of services. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Basic computer, I-Phone and/or tablet skills for effective operation. Trained to operate two (2) Solid Waste vehicles each year, one (1) being a primary vehicle to complete the assigned routes within the prescribed time.

Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications
Education and Experience: High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred. One (1) year of experience operating similar equipment.(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with airbrakes endorsement by the date of hire.

You are entitled to two (2) preventive care treatments per calendar year (6 months apart). There is a $1,500 lifetime maximum for Orthodontia (children up to age 19). Premiums will depend on which tier you choose. EyeMed Vision Care Vision Insurance The City's vision plan allows eligible employees to stay in network or go out of network. Your co-pays will vary depending on the network you use. You are entitled to an exam, frames and lenses once every 12 months. Cigna Life - Life, Voluntary Life, Dependent Life Insurance The City offers eligible employees a basic term life insurance benefit equal to their annual salary up to a $75,000 maximum at no charge. You can purchase additional voluntary life insurance for yourself and your dependents. Cigna Short Term Disability The City provides short term disability coverage to all eligible employees at no cost to the employee. This coverage is used in the event of an accident or illness outside of work. The plan pays 66.67% of your weekly salary up to a maximum of $1,000. Benefits begin on the 31st day of your disability. The City offers a buy-up to the Short Term Disability Benefit with a 7 day wait period. E-Flex Flexible Spending Account A flexible spending account helps you pay out-of-pocket medical, dental, eye care, daycare and other expenses, with tax deferred money deducted from your paycheck each payroll. The maximum annual election is $2,500.00. Over-the-counter medications must be accompanied by a doctor's prescription although other medical supplies will still be eligible for reimbursement. This is a voluntary benefit. Trustmark Supplemental Polices Trustmark Insurance Company offers voluntary supplemental Critical Illness/Cancer, Accident and Universal Life policies which are paid for by the employee. ICMA-RC: Deferred Compensation Plans The City offers eligible employees the opportunity to enroll in a deferred retirement plan. The money that is deducted from your paycheck each payroll is put into this account and is tax deferred at the end of the year. One-on-one meetings with each company are held quarterly so employees can speak with the representative confidentially on preparing for their retirement. This is a voluntary program. Florida Retirement System FRS Eligible employees are enrolled in the Florida Retirement System with an 8 year vesting period. Employees contribute 3% of their gross earnings per payroll which is subject to change with the IRS.Cigna Employee Assistance Program The City offers this program to all employees. This is a confidential counseling program for employees and their families. The City pays for 3 visits and if you choose to continue, you would use the specialist co-pay on your insurance plan.
