About the role
The video game industry sits at the forefront of technology, creativity, and innovation and is navigating an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving legal and public policy landscape. ESA is looking to add a talented technology policy lawyer to its Legal, Regulatory and Policy team to help shape and advance the video game industry’s public policy and regulatory objectives at the federal, state, and international levels. The Counsel will serve as a subject matter expert and provide legal and policy advice to ESA member companies, internal teams, and external consultants.
Duties include monitoring and analyzing technology-related legislation, regulations, litigation and other policy developments affecting the video game industry; help develop and advance ESA policy priorities and advocacy strategies; and preparing legal analyses, policy papers, regulatory filings, testimony, talking points, position papers, presentations, and other advocacy materials. Key issues may include privacy and data protection, children’s online safety, age assurance and parental tools, consumer protection and digital commerce, and regulation of online platforms, digital services, and video game features.
The Counsel will also work closely with ESA’s Government Affairs and Communications and Public Affairs teams, engage ESA member companies to gather feedback and build consensus on industry positions, coordinate with outside counsel, consultants, trade associations, and international partners, and represent ESA externally in coalitions, associations, panels, and other stakeholder meetings.
Qualified candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and a minimum of three years of relevant experience working on technology policy in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. A background in online safety and privacy issues is preferred, and familiarity with the video game industry is a plus.
Ideal candidates will possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, strong analytical abilities, and the ability to distill complex legal and policy issues into clear and concise work product. Candidates should also demonstrate strong collaboration and consensus-building skills, professionalism and discretion, and an ability to develop relationships with government officials and other external stakeholders. Moderate travel may be required. The budgeted salary range for this position is 175k-205k with eligibility for a bonus.
This position is based in Washington, DC. ESA employees are in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and may work remotely Monday and Friday, unless work-related matters require a physical presence.
ESA is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
