Role Overview: What You Bring A minimum of 15 years of experience in underground plumbing or excavation, including at least two years leading crews on residential, light commercial, or civil projects. Experience with trenchless technologies such as pipe bursting or CIPP is a plus. Candidates must be able to read plans, mark-outs, and as-builts, operate and guide equipment safely, and understand proper spotter practices. Strong technical knowledge of pipe materials including PVC, DIP, clay, and ABS, as well as bedding, compaction, grade/laser use, and backflow considerations, is required. Credentials preferred: OSHA 30; competent Person Trenching and Excavation; Continued Space; First Aid/ CPR; Flagger; Class A/B CDL is a plus. The ideal candidate should be clear communicator, calm under pressure, decisive, and organized with strong customer presence. Physical requirements include the ability to lift over 50 pounds; work outdoors in varying conditions; enter/ exist trenches when safe and compliant.
Key Responsibilities: Plan & Execute Jobs - Review work orders, utility locates, videos, and plans; walk jobs and set means/methods.
  • Coordinate permits, inspections, traffic control, utility locates, and material/equipment staging. -
Build daily/weekly crew schedules; assign tasks to operators, pipelayers, and laborers.
  • Lead Crews - Run start-of-day huddles, track progress, remove blockers, coach for quality and speed. -
Uphold housekeeping, trench protection, shoring/shielding, and restoration standards. - Own Safety & Compliance - Serve as the OSHA "Competent Person" for trenching/excavation; document soil classification, protective systems, atmosphere testing, and access/egress.
  • Conduct JSAs/TAILGATEs; enforce PPE and equipment pre-use inspections; investigate incidents. -
Manage Stakeholders - Communicate with homeowners/GCs, inspectors, and utilities; set expectations and updates.
  • Partner with dispatch, plumbing service/install, and warehouse/fleet for smooth handoffs
  • Control Cost & Quality - Verify materials, tickets, and timecards; prevent rework; ensure as-builts/photos are captured. -
Approve change orders; record extra work with documentation that supports billing. - Care for Equipment & Site - Schedule and track maintenance for excavators, skid steers, vacs, dump trucks, trailers, shoring boxes. - Maintain secure, compliant, and tidy jobsites; coordinate traffic/control plans and restoration. - Report & Improve - Hit daily production targets; submit close-out packets; contribute to after-action reviews. - Mentor apprentices; participate in training for trench safety, confined space, and utility awareness.
