About the role
The Volunteer GED Teacher plays a vital role in helping adult learners prepare to earn their GED credential. Volunteers provide instruction, encouragement, and academic support in one or more GED subject areas while fostering a positive and respectful learning environment. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about education and committed to helping adults achieve their educational and career goals.
Responsibilities:
Plan and teach engaging GED preparation lessons in Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and/or Social Studies.
Assess students' academic strengths and areas for improvement.
Provide individualized tutoring and small-group instruction.
Help students develop effective study habits and test-taking strategies.
Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback.
Encourage student participation, confidence, and perseverance.
Maintain attendance and basic instructional records as requested.
Collaborate with TRTC staff to support student success.
Create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma required; bachelor's degree or teaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of GED subject matter and adult learning principles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, compassion, and the ability to motivate adult learners.
- Comfortable working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience in education, tutoring, mentoring, or workforce development is preferred but not required.
- Time Commitment
- Minimum of 4-8 hours per week
- Volunteer commitment of at least three months preferred.
- Flexible weekday and evening opportunities may be available.
