About the role

Extra Train DispatchersNICTD intends to train existing employees for service as extra train dispatchers. Employees interested in qualifying for service as an extra train dispatcher may apply for consideration. Application for consideration does not guarantee an interview. People selected for interviews will be determined from the most qualified candidates within the applicant pool. Applicants are limited to active employees in good standing with NICTD.
Position Requirements: Excellent communication skills. Excellent attendance and work service record. Strong math skills. Prior customer service under stressful or constantly changing circumstances. Understanding of the physical layout of the District's trackage and facilities. Ability to multi-task among competing short-term priorities while maintaining a pleasant disposition. No seniority or agreement conflict between the employee's existing assignment and work as an extra train dispatcher. Excellent work, safety, and attendance records.
Description: Selected candidates will be trained as dispatchers and placed on the dispatcher extra board. Unless and until they acquire enough seniority to hold a regular dispatching position, they will work as needed. When service as a dispatcher conflicts with the hours of service or rest for their regular assignment, employees will be made whole for those hours that they are unable to work because of their service or rest as a train dispatcher. There is no pyramiding or duplication of wages. The intent is to ensure that no employee makes less overall than the straight time hours that they would have made just covering their current assignment. The current 100% straight time rate for a dispatcher is $42.54 per hour. Rates for persons with less than two (2) years of overall NICTD service are subject to any applicable entry level rate progression terms until two (2) years of overall service in combined crafts are attained. Extra train dispatchers who complete training and accept a commitment to fill assignments for the twelve months following qualification receive a $1,000.00 bonus. Qualified extra train dispatchers may receive this $1,000.00 bonus annually upon reconfirmation of their agreement to accept open assignments on a year-by-year basis. Terms of the bonus consistent with Article 15 of the ATDA Agreement.
How To Apply: Complete the application and submit a written resume outlining education, training, experience, and work history. A cover letter outlining the reasons why you are interested and why you believe you are best qualified is encouraged but not required. NICTD is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
