About the role
Job Summary:
Our client, a major U.S. airline, is looking for a Data Engineer to join their Data Engineering, Automation & Analytics team. It's a 6-month contract-to-hire role, onsite in Fort Worth, TX. This person will build and support the Azure data pipelines that feed the company's analytics, reporting, and BI. They'll write SQL and Python to ingest, transform, and model data, build batch and streaming pipelines, handle deployments through CI/CD, and support the product in production as part of a small DevOps team, working closely with senior developers. We're looking for someone who is actively building data pipelines in Microsoft Azure today using SQL and Python, which is the key differentiator for this role. Experience limited to writing reports, dashboards, or SQL queries without building pipelines is not a fit, and data engineering experience limited entirely to AWS, GCP, or on-prem tools with no hands-on Azure is not a strong fit. This position is W-2 only. We do not work with third-party firms or C2C arrangements for this role.
Core Responsibilities:
Build and support batch and streaming data pipelines using Azure services such as Data Factory, Databricks, Event Hub, Stream Analytics, and Azure Functions
Write SQL and Python to ingest, transform, and model data for analytics and reporting
Work with source application teams and product owners to design and implement analytics solutions
Implement data migration solutions using Azure and traditional data warehouse tools
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub
Test, performance tune, and deploy data solutions
Support data pipelines and products in production as part of a DevOps team
Follow and contribute to team coding standards, best practices, and security guidelines
Required Skills/Experience (Must-Haves) Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
3 to 5 years of hands-on data engineering or software development experience in an agile or DevOps environment
3+ years of experience using SQL for data analytics and transformation
Hands-on, current experience developing in Python 3+ years of cloud development and data lake experience, with hands-on Microsoft Azure experience (Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage, Blob Storage, Event Hub, or Azure DevOps)
Experience building data pipelines end to end, from source ingestion through transformation and delivery
Experience supporting data pipelines or applications in production
Open to converting to a full-time role
Located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area or willing to relocate
Preferred Skills/Experience (Nice-to-Haves) Spark, PySpark, or Databricks development experience
Real-time or streaming pipeline experience (Event Hub, Stream Analytics, Kafka)
Teradata development or administration, including migrations from Teradata to the cloud
Azure Data Explorer (ADX) experience
Experience with Snowflake, Oracle, SQL Server, Cassandra, or MongoDB
Experience with CI/CD and infrastructure tools such as Terraform, Jenkins, or GitHub
Experience BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, Alteryx, or Grafana
Experience with data governance tools such as Alation, Monte Carlo, Informatica, or BigID
Airline or travel industry experience
Azure or Spark certification
Key Competencies and BehaviorsHands-on builder who is comfortable working across the full data pipeline
Strong understanding of software design principles and big data concepts
Takes direction well and works closely with senior developers
Takes ownership of problems and supports what they build in production
Communicates clearly with engineers, product owners, and business teams
Strong work ethic and comfortable in a small, collaborative team

Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
