Description: The City of Springfield is actively seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Payroll and Benefits Assistant to support the accurate and timely processing of payroll and administration of employee benefits. This position will work closely with Human Resources, Finance, employees, and benefit team members to maintain accurate records, resolve payroll and benefits questions, and ensure a positive employee experience. The ideal candidate is organized, trustworthy, comfortable working with confidential information, and has strong attention to detail.
What you'll do: Assist with processing regular payroll accurately and on schedule. Enter and maintain employee payroll information in payroll and HR systems. Assist with payroll adjustments, corrections, and employee inquiries. Help ensure payroll records and documentation are accurate and up to date. Maintain confidentiality of payroll and employee information. Review benefit deductions for accuracy. Maintain accurate benefits records and documentation. Respond to employee questions. Assist with onboarding and offboarding processes. Maintain employee files and HR records. Enter and update employee information in HR and payroll systems. Prepare reports and documentation as requested. Provide professional and responsive customer service to employees.
What you'll need:
  • Previous payroll, benefits, human resources, accounting, or administrative experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use payroll and HR information systems.

Qualifications and Requirements: Experience, Education, and Training Two years of Human Resources experience, of which one year must be computerized payroll experience, including work with an electronic HRMS or similar; PREFERREDExperience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven payroll environment; Previous human resources, information systems, or government or public sector experience.
