Refrigeration Engineer - Advanced Development
Location: Marietta, Ohio
Pay: $47.69/hour
Duration: 12-month contract Relocation: Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidateKYO Group is seeking an experienced Refrigeration Engineer to support advanced development initiatives for Thermo Fisher Scientific's cold-storage and ultra-low temperature product portfolio. This position is ideal for an engineer with hands-on experience designing vapor-compression refrigeration systems, preferably including cascade systems and low-GWP refrigerants.
Responsibilities: Design and develop refrigeration systems for ultra-low temperature freezers and laboratory cold-storage products- Develop performance specifications for refrigeration systems and components- Create and execute system-level validation and performance testing- Perform thermal modeling and refrigeration system analysis- Evaluate refrigerants, components, system efficiency, and energy consumption- Conduct engineering trade studies using simulation and empirical test data- Support next-generation refrigeration technology development- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory teams- Support Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly- Maintain engineering requirements, verification documentation, and traceability- Support compliance with UL, IEC, FDA, CE, CSA, Energy Star, and similar requirements- Travel up to 10%Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field- 5+ years of experience developing vapor-compression refrigeration or HVAC/R systems- Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics- Experience with refrigeration system testing and troubleshooting- Experience with thermal modeling, simulation, and performance analysis- Strong root-cause analysis and engineering problem-solving skills Preferred Experience- Cascade refrigeration systems- Ultra-low temperature equipment- Natural refrigerants and low-GWP refrigerants- EES or similar thermal modeling software- Data acquisition systems and automated testing- Lean/PPI or continuous improvement methodologies Military technical experience may be considered when directly applicable to refrigeration, HVAC, thermal systems, or engineering development.
