Position Summary: The Staff Accountant is a key member of the School’s Business Office, reporting to the Director of Finance. This position is responsible for supporting accurate and timely financial operations, maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, and contributing to the monthly close and annual audit processes. This role is well suited for an accounting professional who is detail-oriented, analytical, and naturally curious—someone who wants to understand not only how a process works, but why. The Staff Accountant is expected to take ownership of their work, recognize when information or results do not appear reasonable, ask thoughtful questions, and identify opportunities to improve and streamline processes.
General Responsibilities: Support and execute the Far Brook School Statement of Purpose, Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice and core educational mission. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all financial records, accounting, transactions, especially with student, personnel, financial, and development records. Maintain a visible and collaborative presence across campus, willingly assisting with shared duties and operational tasks that contribute to a healthy school ecosystem
Essential Responsibilities: General Ledger & Financial Reporting Maintain an accurate general ledger and assist with monthly close and financial reporting. Reconcile bank and investment accounts, cash balances, A/R, and revenue schedules. Prepare and record journal entries with supporting documentation. Develop an understanding of the School’s financial activity and how transactions flow through the accounting system. Accounts Payable & Cash Management Facilitate accurate and timely payment of vendors and review supporting documentation. Maintain vendor tax compliance, including W-9/1099 verification and annual 1099 filing. Review and process employee expense reimbursements and credit card activity. Monitor cash activity and assist with cash management and reporting. Research and resolve payment, documentation, or account discrepancies. Accounts Receivable & Revenue Assist with reconciliation of tuition, auxiliary, and other revenue and A/R balances. Follow up appropriately on outstanding balances and assist in resolving account questions. Payroll, Audit, Compliance & Other Reconcile payroll-related general ledger activity and 403(b) activity. Assist with annual financial statement audits, tax filings, and other compliance requirements. Prepare schedules, reconcile accounts, and collect and analyze supporting information from departments across the School. Assist with ad-hoc team initiatives and related tasks as needed
Qualifications & Skills
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
Experience: 2+ years of accounting experience demonstrating a solid understanding of fundamental accounting concepts and the ability to apply them to day-to-day transactions. Nonprofit or school accounting experience is preferred but not required.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, Finalsite, and Camp Brain is preferred but not required; proficiency in Excel and Google Suite.
Competencies: Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy while maintaining an understanding of the broader purpose of the work. Ability to manage responsibilities independently, prioritize deadlines, and communicate effectively when questions or issues arise. Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to the Director of Finance.
Salary & Benefits: This position is a, full-time, exempt position which provides a salary range and benefits eligibility as follows: The compensation for a staff accountant ranges from $65,000-$75,000 annually, based on professional experience, education degree(s) completed and internal equity considerations. However, final salary will be determined based on all qualifications and must be in alignment with the School's benchmarking and compensation model. Medical benefits are available to full-time employees following 30 days of employment (beginning of the 1st of the month following a complete 30 days) and include employer-paid contributions to a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA).Vision and dental plans are available at the employee's cost. The School provides employer-paid life insurance (up to $50,000 in coverage) and employer-paid long-term disability insurance. Additional benefits include tuition remission, educational assistance, and participation in the School's retirement plan, subject to plan eligibility requirements.
