- Interpret prescriptions and dispense pharmaceuticals and related devices in accordance with federal, state, and local laws
- Provide patient education and counseling
- Supervise technical staff and serve as a role model for courteous, compassionate care for customers and co-workers
- Review patient utilization, therapeutic duplications, disease state, drug interactions, drug allergies, dosage and duration of treatment, and abuse or misuse of drugs, taking appropriate action when concerns arise
- Contact prescribers for clarification of orders or to notify them of unobtainable medications
- Verify the appropriate pharmaceutical agent for each prescription order
- Verify each patient receives the specific drug from the proper practitioner
- Calculate accurate doses and prepare compounded prescriptions and IV medications according to physician orders
- Oversee cash management of the store and remain observant of all staff activity
- Assist in orienting new staff, interns, and externs to the department
- Manage workflow, assign workloads, and approve overtime and time off as needed
- Assist in ordering and inventory of pharmaceuticals so quality, cost-effective products are used and appropriate inventory levels are maintained
- Secure the building at the close of the day
- Act as pharmacist in charge in the absence of the managing pharmacist
- This position reports to the Pharmacy Manager, who is well respected within the organization
