About the role
Senior Medium-Voltage Product Design Engineer
Location: Cleveland, Ohio Working Pattern: Hybrid – initial on-site period required
The Role:
A specialist power equipment manufacturer is looking to appoint a Senior Medium-Voltage Product Design Engineer to support the development of its next generation of high-voltage direct-connect load bank products. The current product range operates at approximately 13–14 kV, with the next stage of development targeting 34–38 kV.This is a hands-on product development position for an engineer with strong medium-voltage design experience, particularly where electrical systems must be engineered into compact, transportable equipment rather than large fixed installations.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead electrical design and development of 34–38 kV medium-voltage power equipment. Develop and select MV components including switchgear, vacuum circuit breakers, disconnects, insulators, busbars and protection equipment. Design insulation systems, including creepage and clearance distances, dielectric coordination and insulation barriers. Engineer high-voltage systems within tight physical and mechanical constraints. Develop practical solutions to reduce equipment footprint while maintaining electrical safety, reliability and performance. Support the transition of new designs from concept through prototype, testing and production. Evaluate and specify appropriate MV components, materials and technologies for new product platforms. Work closely with mechanical, manufacturing and engineering teams to integrate electrical systems into transportable equipment. Troubleshoot and resolve design, testing and product performance issues. Contribute technical expertise to the company's longer-term higher-voltage product development strategy. Relevant Product Experience Strong candidates may have experience designing or developing products such as: Medium-voltage load banks / load testing equipmentMV switchgear and vacuum circuit breaker assemblies Medium-voltage switchboards Compact / packaged substationsMV power distribution equipment Mobile or trailer-mounted power equipment Generator paralleling / synchronisation equipmentMV transformers and associated protection systems Utility / industrial MV equipment where 34.5 kV-class systems are involved Other compact electrical equipment operating in the 15–40 kV range Experience with conventional substations or large fixed power distribution systems alone is less relevant unless the candidate has also worked with compact, highly packaged MV equipment.
Candidate Profile:
Significant experience in medium-voltage electrical product design / engineering. Strong understanding of systems operating at 15 kV–40 kV+.Practical knowledge of switchgear, vacuum breakers, insulation systems, dielectric design, creepage and clearance. Experience selecting and integrating MV components into complete products. Comfortable working within tight physical and packaging constraints. Product development experience rather than purely project/application engineering. Able to work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing and testing teams. Ideally experienced with mobile, transportable or compact MV equipment. Location & Working Model The role is based in the Cleveland, Ohio area. The successful candidate will initially spend several months on-site, becoming fully integrated with the engineering team, manufacturing facility and existing product portfolio. Following this initial period, the position will move to a hybrid working model.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
