General Summary: The Police Recruit position is a temporary, at-will (contractual), non-union position. If hired, the Police Recruit will attend a certified Police Academy in Michigan on behalf of and at the expense of the City of Jackson Police Department. Upon successful completion of the Police Academy, the Police Recruit will be promoted to the rank of Police Officer as a vacancy exists. This position would be for enrollment at the 2027 Mid-Michigan Police Academy (LCC) that begins January 11,2027.
Eligibility Requirements: A. Be 21 years of ageB. Be a citizen of the United StatesC. Possess an Associate degree or the equivalent number of college credits (60 credit hours)E. Possess a valid driver's licenseF. Ability to operate an automobile safely and in accordance with traffic lawsG. Ability to understand and adhere to the laws and rules of the DepartmentH. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructionsI. Ability to prepare written reportsJ. Ability to deal courteously and firmly with the general publicK. Ability to qualify on physical strength and agility testL. Ability to meet the mental standards of the jobM. Have 20/20 in each eye correctable to 20/50 in each eye (contact lenses may be used to meet the 20/50 requirement) and have full visual functions and normal color vision and depth perceptionP. Possess good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the City of Jackson Police DepartmentS. Ability to successfully pass drug screening, physical, and psychological evaluations At the time of hire, the Police Recruit must possess a passing score on both the MCOLES Reading/Writing Test and the MCOLES Physical Agility Examination (see details under application process below).The Police Recruit must also possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and a good driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment. Additionally, all City positions require: the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language as necessary for their position; the ability to follow written and oral instructions; and the ability to get along with other employees and members of the public. City employees are also expected to possess and maintain a record of orderly law-abiding citizenship, sobriety, integrity, and loyalty as it pertains to and reflects upon their employment with the City; and must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of their position without excessive absences.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk; occasionally required to run and jump; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to withstand exposure to traffic hazards continuously; withstand exposure to weather, wet conditions, high noise levels, hazardous materials, and personal danger occasionally. The employee may, at any time, be at risk of personal danger including, but not be limited to, the result of an intentional attack by people and/or animals, as well as environmental hazards. The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.
