Hybrid, approximately 2–5 days onsite depending on assignment and program needs About Opportunity The State of Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Disease Intervention Specialist to support the Center for HIV, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Epidemiology. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in public health, epidemiology, disease prevention, community outreach, and patient support. The Disease Intervention Specialist will conduct disease investigation and prevention activities, assist individuals in accessing appropriate services, maintain confidential health information, support contact tracing and surveillance activities, and work closely with epidemiologists, nurses, healthcare providers, and community organizations. This position combines fieldwork, client interaction, data management, disease surveillance, and community-based public health services.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) navigation and support services. Conduct interviews using standardized case-reporting procedures. Assist with epidemiological investigations involving infectious diseases. Conduct follow-up and contact-tracing activities as required. Perform field visits for tuberculosis Directly Observed Therapy (DOT).Review patient video submissions for Video Directly Observed Therapy (VDOT).Maintain accurate digital records of tuberculosis therapy and assigned caseloads. Enter patient, case, and surveillance information into program databases accurately and promptly. Complete surveillance and case-report forms thoroughly and accurately. Maintain confidential patient and program information in accordance with established privacy and confidentiality requirements. Provide clients with standardized health guidance and refer more complex clinical questions to appropriate nursing or clinical staff. Assist individuals in accessing disease prevention, testing, treatment, and referral resources. Provide technical assistance to community organizations and public and private agencies regarding disease prevention and control. Support the development of disease prevention materials and resources. Assist with infectious disease outbreak investigations. Work closely with assigned epidemiologists and nurses on outbreak response and mitigation activities. Educate individuals, organizations, and community partners regarding applicable infectious disease requirements and reporting responsibilities. Assist with the compilation and preparation of surveillance data and reports. Support clinic activities as needed. Perform other related public health duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a combination of education and/or experience in public health, healthcare, community health, epidemiology, disease prevention, social services, case management, health education, or a related field. Candidates should possess: Strong interpersonal and interviewing skills. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Ability to interact professionally and compassionately with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Strong attention to detail and documentation skills. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient and health information. Strong organizational and follow-up skills. Ability to accurately enter and maintain information in electronic databases. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with nurses, epidemiologists, healthcare providers, and community partners. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, infectious disease prevention, surveillance, contact tracing, and reporting procedures. Ability to conduct field visits as required. Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Word, and Power Point. Bilingual candidates fluent in Spanish or Portuguese are preferred and strongly encouraged to apply.
Preferred Experience:
Previous experience in public health, community health, epidemiology, infectious disease prevention, HIV/STD services, tuberculosis programs, contact tracing, patient navigation, case management, health education, healthcare, or community outreach is highly desirable.
Work Environment:
This is a hybrid position, with approximately 2–5 days onsite depending on the assignment and program needs. The position may also require field visits and community-based activities throughout Rhode Island.
