About the role

About Baker Construction NJBaker Construction NJ is a self-performing general contractor based in Lebanon, New Jersey. We are a general contractor that self performs site work, concrete, foundations, steel fabrication and erection, underground utilities, and interior fit-up on commercial projects across the region. As we take on more public and private work, we need financial operations that keep pace with the field.
About the Role: This is a full-time, in-office role replacing a part-time bookkeeping setup. A year in, you'll have taken us from using Sage 100 Contractor for the basics to running purchase orders, contract management, change orders, schedule of values, invoicing, and inventory through it. Our accounts receivable and payable will be clean and current, our prevailing wage and IFTA filings will be on time every time, and our books will be organized well enough that an audit — bonding, tax, or otherwise — is a non-event rather than a scramble.
What You'll Do: Own full-cycle accounts receivable and accounts payable, end to end Prepare and submit payroll data to our payroll provider and manage submissions to our 401(k) plan administrator Expand and administer our use of Sage 100 Contractor — purchase orders, contract management, change orders, schedule of values, invoicing, and inventory Prepare and file prevailing wage / certified payroll reports for public works projects Manage IFTA fuel tax reporting and compliance for our vehicle fleet Handle vehicle registrations and renewals, and manage renewal of company and trade memberships Apply sound accounting practices and internal controls that keep our financials audit-ready at all times Answer incoming calls and serve as a key point of contact for the office
What We're Looking For: Required 5+ years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, with full-cycle AP/AR ownership Solid grounding in accounting fundamentals and best practices — you know how to build a clean, audit-ready set of books, not just enter transactions Experience coordinating payroll submissions with an outside payroll provider and/or 401(k) administrator Strong Excel skills and comfort learning new software systems Excellent organization and communication skills — this role is phone-facing and juggles competing prioritiesA self-starter who takes ownership of the books rather than waiting to be told what to do Preferred Hands-on experience with Sage 100 Contractor (a huge plus, not required)Prior experience in the construction industry, ideally with a general contractor or subcontractor Experience with prevailing wage / certified payroll reporting Experience with IFTA reporting and compliance

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
