About the role
- The ideal candidate will be able to do at least some of the following, with an interest in being exposed to the rest.
- Product engineering
- Design, build, test, and ship features across the Clearstep stack, primarily Go on the backend and React on the front end
- Own projects end to end: write the technical charter, break work into well-scoped tasks, coordinate other engineers, and deliver on schedule
- Build and maintain integrations with EHRs and other healthcare systems using standards such as FHIR and HL7Write code that is well tested, clean, and well architected, and leave the codebase better than you found it rather than solving one-off problems
- Infrastructure and DevOpsBuild, operate, and improve our AWS infrastructure, including containerized services (Docker, Kubernetes/EKS), managed databases, networking, and load balancing
- Stand up and maintain isolated, per-customer and in-region deployments, including outside the United States
- Improve CI/CD, observability, alerting, and runbooks so problems are caught before customers notice
- Serve on the on-call rotation as one of our production-access DevOps engineers, diagnose and resolve outages, and lead blameless post-incident reviews
- Security and compliance
- Implement technical controls behind HIPAA and SOC 2: role-based and per-user access, identity and provisioning, encryption, key rotation, and immutable audit logging of PHI access for all any net new projects
- Triage and remediate vulnerabilities and dependency CVEs, and keep our security backlog under control
- Partner with compliance and customer-facing teams on security questionnaires, customer audits, and incident response testing
- Raise risks early, including calling a stop when something is not ready to launch
- Technical leadership
- Mentor other engineers and give meaningful feedback through code review, task grooming, and acceptance testin
- Propose, evaluate, and implement new technologies and approaches, including how we use AI tools in our own engineering work
- Build broad knowledge of Clearstep's business domain so you can help define the problem, not just solve itRequirements 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Solid expertise in at least one of our core languages, ideally Go, and working proficiency across the stack including React
- A track record of leading major projects from ambiguous requirements through launch
- Hands-on experience running production workloads on AWS with Docker and infrastructure as code
- Experience operating production systems: monitoring, debugging, incident response
- Working knowledge of application and cloud security practices, such as least-privilege access, secrets management, and audit logging
- The ability to pick up new technologies on your own, even when no one in the company has done it before
- Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working directly with product, clinical, and customer teams
- Willing to use AI tools in day-to-day engineering work

- Healthcare industry experience, especially integrating with EMRs such as Epic, Cerner/Oracle Health, eClinicalWorksExperience with FHIR, HL7 v2, SMART on FHIR, or SSO/identity standards (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML) and identity providers such as Keycloak
- Experience implementing HIPAA or SOC 2 technical controls, or working with compliance tooling such as Vanta
- Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and multi-region or single-tenant deployments
- Experience with conversational AI, LLM applications, or contact center and telephony platforms
- Experience at an early-stage startup

- Base salary range of $150,000 to $200,000, commensurate with experience
