Job Opportunity - Lead HTS Magnet Engineer - San Diego, CAI'm seeking a driven expert in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnetic systems to own the full lifecycle of high-performance hardware, from architecture and design through testing, integration, and deployment. This role offers a unique opportunity to help establish and grow our superconducting systems capability while developing cutting-edge technologies for mission-critical applications.
Position Summary: The successful candidate will lead the design, characterization, modeling, and testing of advanced HTS magnetic systems. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in transforming first-principles concepts into high-performance hardware and validating those systems through rigorous testing and analysis.
Responsibilities: Lead the development of high-temperature superconducting magnet systems, including evaluation, architecture, electromagnetic & mechanical design, and thermal integration. Develop and maintain advanced modeling capabilities for superconducting systems, including coupled electromagnetic, thermal, and structural analyses. Design, fabricate, instrument, and test prototypes and integrated hardware systems Conduct design trade studies and drive iterative development cycles connecting simulation, experimentation, and hardware implementation. Support long-term technology strategy, including manufacturing approaches, supplier engagement, testing infrastructure, and scalability planning. Contribute to the development of superconducting technologies intended for challenging operating environments.
Required Qualifications: 5+ years of experience w/superconducting systems, including HTS systems, magnet engineering, applied electromagnetics, cryogenic engineering, or related fields. Proficiency with finite element and multiphysics simulation tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS, or equivalent software Experience designing or evaluating superconducting structures subjected to significant electromagnetic forces and demanding operating environments. Experience with test design & execution on these systems Passion for developing advanced technologies where performance, reliability, system efficiency, and first-principles engineering are critical.
Bonus Qualifications: Experience with superconducting applications such as fusion energy, particle accelerators, pulsed-power, magnets, or related technologies.
