Duties & Responsibilities:
BHEARD (Behavioral Health Emergency Assistance Response Division) is a New York City program that deploys interdisciplinary teams to respond to behavioral health emergencies through the 911 system. Teams operate seven days a week (including holidays). Social Workers operate across a range of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and will be deployed across community, clinical, and field-based settings.
The Social Worker IV serves as both a clinician and team supervisor, blending direct patient care, real-time crisis response, and staff leadership. This role demands strong clinical judgement, adaptability in the field, and the ability to guide Social Workers and novice Social Work supervisors across varied cultural and professional backgrounds. The Social Worker IV ensures teams deliver person-centered, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care while maintaining operational and documentation standards.
Fieldwork involves engagement, de-escalation, rapid, crisis assessments, and linkage to appropriate services. Administrative responsibilities include supervising staff, reviewing clinical documentation for quality assurance, and handling day-to-day operational challenges.
Some of the physical activities performed in this position include working outdoors in all weather conditions, climbing stairs, treating individuals who may have infectious and communicable diseases, working for extended periods of the day or night in a vehicle, treating patients at heights such as rooftops, bridges or elevated highways, and carrying a mobile radio for communication purposes. Must be able to perform duties in a variety of indoor and outdoor work environments and community settings, including in ambulance-style vehicles, residences, healthcare facilities, shelters, public spaces, and other locations where services are provided. Ballistic vests are available. When in the field, administrative tasks such as telephone calls, virtual meetings and medical record documentation are typically done in a moving vehicle.
The Social Worker IV must be able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the Social Worker IIs and IIIs.
General tasks and responsibilities will include:
Provide individual and group clinical supervision for Social Workers and perform all related tasks
Provide real-time consultation and guidance on complex cases to mental health clinicians in the field; face-to-face and via telephone
Conduct crisis evaluations, including risk and safety assessments
Lead de-escalation, engagement and crisis intervention in the field
Rapidly develop disposition plans aligned with individual needs and available services
Review clinical documentation for accuracy and quality assurance
Manage staff performance evaluations, training and professional development
Complete all assigned performance management processes, including scheduling evaluations, tracking due dates, and maintaining performance review documentation
Oversee and maintain employee time and attendance records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with program and HR policies
Ensure compliance with H+H, city, state and federal standards and regulations
Participate in program, borough, and departmental meetings as required
