About the role

Boat Captain: The Mural Group in Detroit Boat Captain: The Mural Group in Detroit The Mural Group Detroit, MI Start Date 09/13/2026 Full-Time The Mural Group is hiring a Boat Captain for harbor assist towing in the consolidated port serving Detroit, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio. The full-time role requires at least three to four years of experience and covers towing-vessel operation within the Great Lakes system. The primary work location is Detroit, with assignments also reaching Toledo. The work combines vessel control with safety, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and crew oversight. The schedule includes weekends, holidays, and nights on short notice. Travel to tug docks throughout the Great Lakes system is part of the role. Stays away from home may be required when harbor and cross-lake assignments demand it. Role: Boat Captain Employer: The Mural Group, Industrial Division Location: Detroit, Michigan, with work in Toledo, Ohio Applicants should have the required towing-vessel credentials ready and settle their availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and Great Lakes travel before applying. The role requires regular work around tug docks, vessels, ladders, confined spaces, and changing weather conditions. Harbor Assist Towing The captain directs harbor assist towing within a consolidated port, where tug crews position and move vessels under close control. Cross-lake assignments expand the operating area across the Great Lakes system, and the captain travels to tug docks as work changes. The marine jobs field includes roles that combine vessel handling with maintenance records and regulated operations. The Boat Captain role assigns the captain to outside-tow quote preparation as well as vessel work. The captain reviews operating conditions, keeps vessels crewed, and checks that operations meet regulatory requirements, company standards, and customer expectations. Review engine room logs, comments, and engine-hour reports. Review outstanding maintenance items with the Engineer. Prepare outside-tow quotes. Inspect vessels for seaworthiness. Required Licenses And Credentials The role requires a valid USCG Master of Towing Vessel License for the Great Lakes, Inland Waters, and Western Rivers. A valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential, Marine Radio Operator Permit, CPR and First Aid card, and driver's license are also required. The marine crew involved in towing work must meet the credential and training rules attached to the vessel and operating waters. The license requirement connects the role to formal merchant-marine credentialing rather than recreational boat operation. The captain also ensures that vessel personnel comply with regulatory training requirements. Courtesy, tact, good judgment, independent work, communication, and leadership are part of the qualification profile. Vessel Safety And Maintenance The captain implements safe and environmentally sound vessel-operation procedures. Vessel inspections cover seaworthiness, while maintenance coordination addresses deficiencies before they interfere with safe operation. Familiarity with tug operations, marine-equipment repair, and marine-equipment maintenance is required. Damage and personal-injury investigations are part of the captain's operational duties. The captain also checks compliance with federal requirements governing towing vessels under 46 CFR Subchapter M and follows the company's Responsible Carrier Program Manual. Detroit boat operations therefore require recordkeeping, inspection, repair coordination, and crew compliance in the same work cycle. Great Lakes Work Conditions The schedule changes with towing assignments and includes weekends, holidays, and nights on short notice. Travel reaches tug docks throughout the Great Lakes system, and the role can require time away from the captain's home residence. Work takes place in rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, and other changing weather. The physical requirements include carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders repeatedly, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, and standing constantly. Loud noise is a daily exposure, and confined-space access is part of the work environment. The captain must remain able to perform vessel checks and operational duties while wearing the personal protective equipment required for the day's work. Harbor assist towing depends on precise communication between the wheelhouse, deck crew, engineers, tug docks, and the vessels receiving assistance. The captain's decisions affect line handling, vessel position, crew safety, and the timing of maintenance work during a movement. The Mural Group's Industrial Division connects the Boat Captain role to both navigation and shoreside coordination. A captain who can document engine hours, identify deficiencies, communicate with the Engineer, and maintain regulatory compliance handles the operational record as carefully as the vessel itself.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
