Position Overview: The Academic Sales Manager leads as a player-coach. This person carries their own academicterritory while managing and developing a team of up to five Account Executives who coveracademic and research institutions across the United States. The role requires a travel commitment of up to 45%, including but not limit to trade shows, vendor shows, and client visits alone or with team members. Our priorities for this role are clear: generate leads, convert leads into revenue, and respondto every customer inquiry extremely quickly. Fast, accurate response is central to how we winand keep customers.
Key Responsibilities: Team Leadership• Lead, coach, and develop up to 5 Account Executives with mixed experience levels• Set weekly and monthly goals for leads, pipeline, and revenue, and track them• Run regular 1:1s, pipeline reviews, and team meetings• Monitor inquiry response times across the team and step in when a response is at risk ofbeing late• Support hiring, onboarding, and performance reviews for team members• Balance workload and territory coverage across the team Personal Territory• Own and grow an assigned academic territory with an individual revenue quota• Find, qualify, and convert new leads from inbound inquiries, campaigns, trade shows, and outreach• Build long-term relationships with principal investigators, lab managers, core facilities, and purchasing departments Lead Generation and Conversion• Work with Marketing on campaigns, webinars, and lead nurturing for academiccustomers• Make sure every lead is followed up and recorded in CRM• Turn quotes, samples, and trial orders into repeat business• Find and grow key accounts across universities, research institutes, and government labs Inquiry Response (Top Priority)• Respond to customer inquiries, quote requests, and technical questions quickly, and makesure the team meets the same standard• Build team processes such as coverage schedules, backup owners, and templates so noinquiry waits• Route technical questions quickly to the team's designated FAS or TAM and follow up toclosure Resource Coordination• Work with FAS, TAM, Customer Service, Marketing, and Operations to solve customerneeds• Act as the team's main link to other internal teams Events and Travel• Represent the company at trade shows, scientific conferences, and vendor shows• Complete assigned client visits and plan optional key-account visits with managementsupport• Collect and follow up on event leads within 3 days of each event Reporting• Keep CRM data accurate and up to date for self and team• Report team results, pipeline, lead conversion, and response metrics to leadership• Share market feedback on customer needs, competitors, and pricing Success Measure• Team and individual revenue against sales goal• Number of qualified leads created and lead-to-order conversion rate• Inquiry response time against target• Growth in new and repeat academic accounts• Team retention, development, and performance
Qualifications: Required• Bachelor's degree in life sciences, biology, biochemistry, or a related field• 3–5+ years of life science sales experience, ideally selling reagents, antibodies, proteins, or lab products to academic customers• 1–2+ years leading or mentoring sales team members, formally or as a team lead• Proven record of meeting or beating sales targets• Strong sense of urgency and discipline in following up with customers• Hands-on CRM experience (Salesforce / Hub Spot / other)• Clear written and spoken communication skills• Ability to travel for trade shows and client visits, up to 45%Preferred• MS or PhD in a life science field• Knowledge of academic purchasing processes, grants, and institutional buying• Existing relationships in US academic research institutions• Experience with inside sales, virtual selling, or lead-generation models
