About the role
Backcountry Camp Cook / Wrangler Medicine Lake Outfitters is a horse and mule outfit based in the Gallatin Valley that has been in business for the past fifty years. We are a concessionaire in Yellowstone Park offering extended pack trips and day rides. In the fall we outfit eight-day elk hunts in the backcountry of the Madison Range. We are looking for a camp cook for the early October through November 20th time frame. Responsibilities include meal planning, grocery shopping, preparing meals for six to eight people, dishwashing, and maintaining a clean camp kitchen and dining tent. Cooking is done on propane and wood fired stoves. Work includes early mornings, long days, and variable weather conditions. Housing is personal wall tent with wood stove in camp and, if necessary, bunkhouse when in the valley. This job is best suited to someone who is physically capable of living in a remote camp for extended periods of time and who has limited outside responsibilities. Days off are limited. It is 'very full time'.We are non-smoking. We cannot accommodate outside visitors, dogs or personal horses. A personal interview is required for all applicants. Qualified individuals from Montana, Wyoming, or Idaho preferred. In addition to a background in cooking, we are hoping to find someone with a solid background in handling horses (including trail riding) and the personality and communication skills necessary to provide guests with a safe and enjoyable horseback riding experience on the five hour ride from trailhead to camp. Previous experience working wilderness camps or dude ranches would be a big plus. If you love the mountains, horses, working with a small team of talented people, and have the freedom to walk away from the busyness of town... please get in touch. Expressions of interest should include a resume or at least enough information to help us understand who you are, your background and skill sets.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
