Acccounting Director – Senior Controller-Job Description
Position Summary:
The Director provides leadership and oversight for the Company's accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to executive leadership, this position manages the Controller and accounting team while ensuring the effective execution of payroll, billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, tax compliance, cash management, and financial reporting activities. This role is responsible for the overall performance of the finance and accounting function, including team leadership, process improvement, internal controls, and financial insight. The successful candidate will combine strong financial expertise with business acumen and the ability to build accountability, develop employees, and drive operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Department Management
- Provide direct leadership and oversight of the Controller and accounting department.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of 4-5 finance and accounting professionals.
- Establish departmental goals, performance expectations, and accountability measures.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, workload management, and succession planning.
- Foster a culture of ownership, accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Financial Oversight
- Oversee the accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting.
- Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
- Monitor financial performance and provide meaningful analysis to executive leadership.
- Ensure strong internal controls and compliance with company policies. Accounting & Operational Functions
- Oversee payroll administration.
- Oversee billing and accounts receivable functions.
- Monitor cash flow and working capital.
- Ensure timely tax filings and regulatory compliance.
- Supervise month-end and year-end close processes.
- Improve processes and systems to increase efficiency and accuracy. Business Partnership
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership.
- Provide financial insights to support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Identify business risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Support organizational growth through scalable financial processes and controls.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing accounting teams.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics and Great Plains.
- Demonstrated business acumen and operational decision-making skills.
- CPA preferred but not required.
- Experience managing a Controller and 3-5 team members.
- Strong understanding of payroll, billing, AR, AP, tax compliance, and financial reporting.
