About the role

Job Description: Public Sector Solutions Group (PS2G) is hiring two Smoking Enforcement Investigators to support a District of Columbia government agency. In this role, you will help the District enforce its smoke-free workplace and tobacco control laws, protecting workers, residents, and visitors from secondhand smoke. You will work from an office in Southeast DC and spend much of your time in the field, conducting inspections at restaurants, bars, retail stores, entertainment venues, health care settings, and other public places across the District.
What You Will Do:
  • Conduct routine, complaint-driven, and unannounced inspections to confirm compliance with smoke-free laws
  • Respond promptly to public complaints received by phone, email, and online forms
  • Inspect establishments for active smoking, smoking residue, and use of smoking products
  • Verify that required "No Smoking" signage is posted, visible, and unobscured
  • Conduct undercover surveillance when needed to document violations
  • Issue notices of infraction for smoking, signage, and tobacco control violations
  • Document findings using photos, evidence logs, witness statements, and standardized forms
  • Complete follow-up inspections to confirm corrective action
  • Educate business owners and managers on smoke-free laws, exemptions, signage rules, and how to come into compliance
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely records and reports
  • What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public health, environmental health, regulatory enforcement, or a related field (required)1 to 3 years of experience in investigative or enforcement work, including writing investigation reports (required)
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to document evidence accurately
  • Clear, professional communication with business owners and the public, including in tense situations
  • Sound judgment and the ability to work independently in the field
  • Comfort with frequent travel throughout DCFamiliarity with DC regulations, code enforcement, or public health compliance is a plus
