Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.
Position Description: The Department of Educationat Spelman College invitesapplications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor positionbeginning Fall 2027within the Elementary Education (PK–5certification) track of the Educator Preparation Program, with aspecialization in STEM Education. The successful candidate willprepare teacher candidates to design and lead integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction in elementaryclassrooms, while contributing to the department’s broader missionof preparing exceptional, equity-minded educators. This position combines undergraduate teaching, clinical supervisionof teacher candidates, scholarly research, and service to thedepartment, college, and profession.
Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate courses in elementary STEM methods, mathematics and science education, and related courses in the Educator Preparation Program curriculum. Supervise and mentor teacher candidates during field placementsand student teaching, with particular attention to STEM instructionin PK–5 settings. Maintain an active research and scholarship agenda in STEMeducation, elementary mathematics or science teaching and learning, or a closely related area. Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvementof the Elementary Education program, including alignment with statecertification and accreditation standards. Participate in departmental, college, and professional service, including committee work and engagement with local schoolpartners. Cultivate partnerships with PK–5 schools and districts to supportfield placement sites and applied STEM education initiatives.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate (Ph. D. or Ed. D.) in Elementary Education, STEMEducation, Curriculum & Instruction, or a closely relatedfield, conferred by the appointment start date. Demonstrated expertise in STEM instruction, includingmathematics and/or science education. Evidence of, or strong potential for, high-quality teaching atthe undergraduate level. Evidence of, or strong potential for, scholarly research andpublication. Experience in PK–12 classroom teaching or equivalent clinicalexperience.*3 Letters of Professional Reference Research Statement Teaching Philosophy Sample Syllabus Cover LetterCVCopies of official undergraduate and graduate transcripts arerequired.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience teaching in a college or university educatorpreparation program. Experience supervising teacher candidates in clinical or fieldplacements. Familiarity with state teacher certification requirements andaccreditation processes (e.g., CAEP, GaPSC).Experience developing partnerships with PK–5 schools ordistricts.
