About the role
VTD Helper PositionJSW Steel is seeking an experienced VTD Helper to join our team! The selected person will support the operation of the Vacuum Tank Degasser (VTD), a critical process used to refine molten steel and achieve precise metallurgical quality. This role works hands-on with operators to prepare equipment, monitor processes, handle materials, and maintain a safe, clean work environment. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-heat industrial setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the VTD Operator with equipment setup, operation, and shutdown of the vacuum degassing system.
- Prepare ladles, hoses, alloy additions, and sampling tools prior to treatment.
- Monitor equipment for leaks, pressure fluctuations, temperature issues, and other abnormal conditions.
- Communicate process conditions and updates clearly to the Operator and Supervisor.
- Follow all instructions provided by supervision to support safe and efficient operations.
- Comply with all plant safety rules, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and hot metal protocols.
- Maintain safe working conditions around molten steel, heavy equipment, and overhead cranes.
- Immediately report hazards, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe behaviors to supervision.
- Assist with the delivery, staging, and handling of alloys for the VTD process.
- Safely manage slag and debris using hand tools such as shovels, bars, and hooks.
- Support sample collection and ensure timely transfer to Quality Control personnel.
- Perform routine cleaning of VTD platforms, hoses, hoods, and surrounding work areas.
- Assist with basic maintenance tasks including gasket replacement, hose connections, and water line checks.
- Keep tools maintained and workstations organized and free of hazards.
- Work collaboratively with crane operators, ladlemen, furnace operators, and QC technicians.
- Accurately follow verbal and written instructions in a fast-paced production environment.
- Participate in daily safety meetings, pre-shift briefings, and shift change communications.
- Skills, Experience and Education:
- High school diploma or GED.Ability to work safely in extreme heat, high noise levels, and around molten steel.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding work.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Previous experience in steelmaking or heavy industrial environments. Familiarity with melt shop operations, including ladles, furnaces, or vacuum systems.
