Departmental Objective The Student-Athlete Transition & Support unit provides holistic, student-centered support to student-athletes throughout their collegiate journey at Christopher Newport University. The SATS team works closely with student-athletes as they transition to, through, and beyond their experience at CNU, helping them navigate academic, personal, social, and career-related challenges and opportunities. Through individualized meetings, proactive outreach, cross-campus collaboration, and intentional programming, the SATS team supports student-athletes in developing the skills, confidence and connections needed to thrive during their time at the university and successfully transition into life after athletics and graduation.
Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to effectively implement individualized high-quality support under the guidance of the Director of Student-Athlete Transition & Support to foster student development, promote retention and persistence, and facilitate the successful transition of first- and second-year student-athletes throughout their collegiate experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position Skills in coaching and mentoring students Excellent interpersonal communication skills Ability to communicate and work with athletics department coaches and staff Demonstrated organizational and time management skills Excellent computer skills to include calendars and other modules Excellent skills with Microsoft Office Suite Excellent skills with Google Mail and Drives Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Education: High school graduate or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diploma
Experience: Experience providing guidance or mentorship to students
Additional Consideration(s)
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or related fields
18 credit hours in Master’s level (or higher) courses in counseling or student advising
Experience: Experience in academic affairs, or student affairs in a college or university setting Experience as a student-athlete, coach, and/or educator at a NCAA Division I, II, or III institution, or K-12 school Experience in a university learning support or academic advising center Role Code Role Code 29143
Salary Information: Salary $17.06 to $21.32, Commensurate with Education and Experience
Conditions of Employment: This is an HOURLY position and does NOT entitle the incumbent to Commonwealth of Virginia benefits and is limited to 1500 hours in a 365-day period.
