Overview: As a Transcriptionist, you will help the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) to meet its mission of providing national leadership, resources, and coordination to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations and American Indians and Alaska Natives and to eliminate health disparities. You will use your foreign language and translation knowledge, skills, and abilities to produce materials that are more accessible to limited English proficiency (LEP) communities, helping HHS OMH to promote programs, initiatives and administration health priorities, empowering LEP communities to access HHS OMH materials independently, and making them more informed about important health and wellness issues. Remote: This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm Eastern Time.
Responsibilities: Translate HHS materials into various languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and French. Provide over-the-phone and/or video interpretation services on an as-needed basis for HHS meetings, conferences, briefings, or training events. Develop and disseminate communications that promote English language education and literacy resources available to LEP communities. Develop materials that inform LEP individuals and families of federally supported and community-based English language learning programs and resources. Develop materials that encourage English language acquisition as a path to greater access to Federal services, health care, employment, and civic participation. Produce materials in plain English at accessible reading levels and in formats suitable for multichannel distribution (digital, broadcast, and print).Develop materials that reinforce that English proficiency enables direct, independent engagement with HHS programs and services. Support HHS OMH’s engagement with community-based organizations, health centers, schools, libraries, and faith communities to distribute English literacy promotion materials and connect LEP individuals with English language learning resources. Juggle multiple translation tasks simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment. Attends and contributes to project status update meetings at least biweekly.
Qualifications
Required: Bachelor’s degree in linguistics or a foreign language, such as Spanish, Chinese, Russian, or French. At least three years of experience working as a translator or a similar occupation. At least three years of experience editing, proofreading, and formatting in Microsoft Word. Ability to juggle multiple editing tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Must be eligible for an HHS Public Trust security clearance. Desired: Bilingual or multilingual English speaker, with fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, French, or other major language(s) spoken by a significant portion of the U.S. population. Master’s degree in linguistics or a foreign language, such as Spanish, Chinese, Russian, or French. Federal government, government contracting, or public health experience preferred but not required.
