About the role

Visitor Experience Assistant This role is currently expected to be a temporary assignment of approximately six (6) months. The duration of the position and future employment opportunities may be adjusted or extended based on business needs and organizational requirements. The Visitor Experience Assistant (VX) serves as the face of the institution. Duties include greeting visitors, processing admission payments, answering general inquiries, servicing the Museum Gift Shop as well as monitoring and enhancing the visitor experience throughout the gallery spaces. VX also provide support for Museum programming which includes preparing materials, facilitating events and programs, and assisting with set up and clean up.
Primary Job Duties:
  • Front DeskGuest Services & Reception: Greet visitors warmly, provide orientation, share exhibit details, and explain facility rules. Assist with lockers and coat check area
  • Ticketing & Sales: Process admission fees, scan tickets, and sell memberships, event passes, and gift shop merchandise.
  • Cash Handling: Operate the cash register/point-of-sale (POS) system, balance transactions, and complete opening and closing cash counts.
  • Communications: Answer incoming phone calls, route inquiries, and respond to general visitor questions.
  • Administrative Support: Track daily attendance counts, log visitor data, and maintain a tidy reception area.
  • Gift ShopAssist with selections: Guide customers in choosing souvenirs, apparel, books, or educational toys. Answer questions about availability of items by breed.
  • Restock shelves: Keep displays full, organized, and visually appealing throughout the shift.
  • Process new merchandise: Provide inventory counts and place price tags on new items.
  • Track stock levels: Count inventory, report damaged items, and alert supervisors when products run low.
  • Programs and EventsStaff Events: Assist in delivering on-site programming such as Bark After Dark, Breed Spotlight, and Art After Hours. Facilitate hands-on learning experiences and lead group activities for visitors of all ages.
  • Logistics Support: Support the set-up and break-down of program materials, equipment, and activity stations.
  • Required Skills, Specialized Knowledge and Competency Requirements:
  • Customer service experience. Retail and/or Museum experience strongly preferred.
  • Availability on both Saturday and Sunday weekly.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working with a variety of audiences.
  • Comfort working with live dogs required.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Willingness to engage in continuous learning about the collections, exhibitions, and programs.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • The hourly rate for this position in New York City is $17.00 per hour. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as skills, experience, job-related knowledge, qualifications, and geographic location.
