Role Description:
The Excess Casualty Construction Underwriter is a full-time remote role responsible for evaluating, pricing, and underwriting excess casualty risks within the construction sector. This role involves reviewing submissions, analyzing loss histories, assessing exposure and coverage needs, and structuring policies that align with company guidelines and profitability goals. The underwriter will negotiate terms and conditions with brokers, prepare quotes and binders, and maintain strong relationships with distribution partners. Day-to-day tasks include monitoring portfolio performance, staying current on market trends and legal developments affecting construction and casualty insurance, and collaborating with internal teams on product, actuarial, and claims-related initiatives. The role also requires maintaining accurate documentation, contributing to underwriting best practices, and supporting strategic growth objectives in targeted markets.
Qualifications:
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial, actuarial, and exposure data for complex construction risks. Experience in Excess & Surplus lines insurance, preferably with knowledge in construction risks, layering, pricing. Additional knowledge in non-construction business is a plus. Proficiency in underwriting principles and practices, including risk selection, attachment point, pricing, and terms. Background or familiarity with actuarial science concepts as they relate to loss modeling, rating, and portfolio management. Knowledge of casualty insurance, including liability coverages, legal environment, and industry standards relevant to construction. Effective communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain broker and client relationships. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and comfort working independently in a remote environment. Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Actuarial Science, or a related field, or relevant professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM) are a plus. Proficiency with standard office and underwriting software; ability to learn and use internal systems and rating tools. Demonstrated commitment to ethical decision-making, inclusive teamwork, and continuous professional development.
