Job Title: Digital Accessibility & Compliance Specialist (WCAG)
Project: UT San Antonio - Valdez Institute for Economic Development (VIED) Web Redesign & Migration Position Overview We are seeking a Digital Accessibility & Compliance Specialist to lead digital accessibility efforts for the consolidation, redesign, and migration of 10 university websites into a standardized WordPress platform. This role will ensure all digital assets, templates, code, and content strictly adhere to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards and public sector accessibility regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Accessibility Auditing & Testing: Conduct comprehensive manual and automated accessibility audits (using tools like WAVE, axe, and screen readers) across all templates, page designs, and web content.
  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA Compliance: Enforce technical compliance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards, Texas Administrative Code (TAC) accessibility requirements, and federal Section 508 guidelines.
  • Screen Reader & Assistive Technology Compatibility: Validate user interface components, forms, navigation menus, and media using assistive technologies, including NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and keyboard-only navigation.
  • Inclusive Design & Remediation: Collaborate with UI/UX designers and front-end WordPress developers to remediate accessibility issues in themes, plugins, site layouts, and interactive media.
  • Document & Content Accessibility: Oversee remediation guidelines for non-HTML content, ensuring downloadable documents (PDFs, docs, tables) meet accessible document standards.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed accessibility compliance logs, Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPAT), and remediation progress reports for institutional stakeholders. Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience: 4+ years of specialized experience in digital accessibility engineering, accessibility auditing, or inclusive web design, preferably within higher education or government agencies.
  • Certifications: IAAP Certification (CPACC, WAS, or CPWA) highly preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Deep technical knowledge of HTML5, ARIA roles/landmarks, CSS, JavaScript accessibility patterns, and automated testing engines (axe, Siteimprove, Lighthouse).
  • Assistive Tech Mastery: Hands-on proficiency with major screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver) and screen magnification software.
  • Standards Expertise: In-depth knowledge of WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria, Section 508, and state higher-education accessibility standards.
