Role Overview: The Senior Underwriter, DIC/Earthquake is responsible for underwriting and managing a profitable portfolio of Difference in Conditions (DIC), Earthquake, and related catastrophe-exposed property risks. This role plays a key part in executing underwriting strategy, driving profitable growth, maintaining strong broker relationships, and ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and authority levels. The successful candidate will underwrite complex commercial earthquake risks, evaluate catastrophe exposures, develop broker partnerships, and contribute to portfolio management across assigned territories.
Key Responsibilities: Underwrite new and renewal DIC/Earthquake accounts within delegated authority while maintaining profitability objectives. Analyze complex property schedules, geotechnical reports, COPE data, catastrophe model output, and engineering information to assess risk quality. Determine appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, deductibles, and capacity deployment based on risk characteristics and portfolio strategy. Utilize catastrophe modeling tools and exposure management systems to evaluate accumulations and manage portfolio aggregation. Maintain compliance with underwriting guidelines, carrier agreements, regulatory requirements, and internal governance standards. Develop and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers through office visits, virtual meetings, industry conferences, and ongoing account discussions. Collaborate with distribution, actuarial, claims, catastrophe analytics, and operations teams to support business objectives.
Key Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, Engineering, or related field preferred.2+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, with significant DIC and Earthquake underwriting expertise. Strong understanding of western U.S. earthquake exposures and catastrophe risk management. Demonstrated experience underwriting layered property programs, shared and layered placements, and complex schedules. Working knowledge of catastrophe modeling platforms such as RMS, Verisk, or equivalent tools. Experience with non-admitted/E&S markets and delegated underwriting authority preferred. Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills. Proven broker relationship management and business development capabilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and Power BI experience preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to travel up to 20-30% for broker meetings, conferences, and industry events.
Preferred Experience: California earthquake underwriting experience strongly preferred. Experience underwriting habitational, commercial real estate, and middle-market property portfolios. Familiarity with seismic retrofit considerations, geotechnical hazards, and earthquake engineering concepts. CPCU, ARM, AU, or other industry designations preferred. The expected salary range for this role is $90,000-$150,000/year. (Underwriter or Senior Underwriter).Please note that the salary information shown above is a general guideline only.
