About the role
Role description:
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) seeks to hire a 5207 Engineer to join the Water & Power Planning Group within the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power (HHWP) Division. HHWP is based out of Moccasin, CA, in the western Sierra Nevada Foothills and is responsible for delivering approximately 85% of San Francisco’s water supply along with power generation from four hydroelectric plants. In addition to other various tasks, the Water Operations Engineer will be responsible for preparing careful analysis and reporting of water and power data; developing, calibrating, and running hydraulic and hydrologic system models; acquiring a complete understanding of San Francisco’s upcountry water rights and related accounting procedures; and assisting with regular planning of pipeline, reservoir and powerhouse operations at various timescales.
Essential Duties:
Development, maintenance, and/or calibration of hydraulic models pertaining to tunnel and pipeline flows.
Use hydraulic models of pipeline and tunnel system to assist with planning and operation of Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct.
Assist with design and review of construction and maintenance projects affecting water and power operations.
Collection, analysis, QA/QC and reporting of HHWP water and power operational data on intervals ranging from daily to annually.
Computing and reporting on San Francisco’s water rights on the Tuolumne River.
Utilize weather and streamflow forecasts to support planning of HHWP reservoir and powerhouse operations.
Regularly communicate and present technical information to various internal and external stakeholders along the Tuolumne River.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications1. Three (3) years verifiable professional civil or environmental engineering which includes two (2) years experience equivalent to or higher than a 5203 Assistant Civil/Environmental EngineerAND2. Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State ofCalifornia in one of the civil or environmental discipline.
Substitutions:a. A Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering discipline only may substitute for one year of work experience.b. A Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering discipline only may substitute for two years work experience.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience using data management software and tools
Experience with programming languages such as Matlab, Python, R, Visual Basic, CExperience using hydraulic and hydrologic models to support water operations and supply analysis
Experience with water rights accounting
Experience with open- and closed-channel flow measurement and modeling
Experience working in the utilities industry
