At BRK Tech, we partner across these businesses to design, build, and operate modern technology platforms that run at massive scale and support long‑term, real‑world impact. We are hiring for remote (US only) Principal Messaging Platform Engineers for a Berkshire Portfolio company to work in our Infra and Ops org. Here you would build a greenfield, open‑source enterprise messaging and integration platform that is mission‑critical to energy generation, transmission, and power grid operations. This messaging layer is the glue that ties together all services and applications—connecting databases, internal systems, field operations, and external vendors via real‑time and batch integrations. The platform cannot operate without this role. You will design, build, scale, and operate the enterprise messaging bus, supporting Kafka across multiple data centers, consolidating and uplifting messaging capabilities across 11 data centers, and enabling systems that have never previously communicated to work together reliably.
Responsibilities:
- Architect and build an enterprise messaging bus for real‑time and batch integrations
- Design and operate Kafka and/or RabbitMQ at enterprise scale (multi‑DC)
- Own topic/queue design, message flows, durability, scaling, and reliability
- Enable integrations via messaging, APIs, service mesh, and event‑driven patterns
- Support vendor‑facing and internal integrations (batch, streaming, real‑time)
- Drive messaging consolidation and modernization across data centers
- Implement open‑source observability and operational best practices
Required Skills & Experience:
- 10+ years of relevant experience with Cloud, Platform, SRE, or DevOps engineering and must have experience building messaging platforms (not just used them).Hands‑on experience building, scaling, configuring and operating Kafka and/or RabbitMQ platforms or similar
- Enterprise messaging architecture: topic/queue design, flow patterns, scaling, HAExperience with event‑driven and integration‑heavy environments
- Strong background in Cloud, SRE, Platform, or DevOps engineering
- Kubernetes and containerized services (on‑prem and/or cloud)API‑based integrations and distributed systems fundamentals
- Production ownership mindset for mission‑critical systems
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
