About the role
Position Overview:
We are seeking a Control System Engineer to design, program, commission, and maintain industrial control systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. The role focuses on PLC and HMI/SCADA development, system integration, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of control strategies across water/wastewater/ hydroelectric, and utilities. The successful candidate will work closely with operations, maintenance, and project teams to deliver turnkey control solutions from concept through startup and handover.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, program, and document PLC logic for new and existing automation systems using ladder logic, structured text, or function block programming
- Develop, configure, and maintain SCADA and HMI applications to provide operators with clear, reliable control and visualization
- Integrate field devices, instrumentation, drives, and safety systems using industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.)Perform system commissioning, loop checks, FAT/SAT support, and assist with plant startups to ensure systems perform to specification
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues in control systems to minimize downtime and improve reliability
- Collaborate with project managers, mechanical/electrical engineering, and operations teams to scope projects, estimate work, and deliver control system milestones on schedule
- Create and maintain clear engineering documentation, including control narratives, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, functional test plans, and user manuals
- Implement and optimize control strategies (PID tuning, sequencing, interlocks) and support continuous improvement initiatives to increase process efficiency and safety
- Provide technical support and training to operations and maintenance staff on control system operation and best practices
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations across all control system activities
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience)3+ years of experience in control systems engineering within industrial environments (experience requirements flexible based on seniority)
- Proven hands-on experience with PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and PLC programming languages (ladder logic, structured text, function block)
- Experience developing and maintaining SCADA systems and HMI applications (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition, Factory
- Talk, WinCC)
- Strong understanding of industrial networks, communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profibus) and field instrumentation
- Familiarity with industrial controls, drives, motor control, and basic electrical wiring and schematics
- Demonstrated ability to commission systems, perform loop checks, and troubleshoot control hardware/software issues
- Excellent problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing engineering documentation and operator training materials
- Willingness to travel to project sites and support off-shift commissioning as required; valid drivers license
- Relevant certifications (e.g., ISA, Rockwell, Siemens) or training are a plus
