About the role

The Probate Associate Judge handles assigned cases from initiation to completion, presides over hearings, conducts legal research, and issues orders for Beaufort County. Duties also include: supervising assign staff, drafting Court policies, and preparing administrative reports. Presides over hearings and trials before the Court, both in the courthouse, hospitals, and other locations; addresses issues and written rulings/orders in connection with these hearings/trials. Supervises Probate Court personnel including clerks in the performance of their duties. Trains Court staff. Reviews and conducts legal research regarding matters pending before the Court; renders opinion to the Judge and Court staff. Interfaces with lawyers, the general public, and others doing business with the Court including official of other government agencies. Delivers presentations at seminars for lawyers, judges, hospital staff, and law enforcement on various legal matters. Prepares reports for the County and Court Administration. Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level. Requires a Juris Doctor degree; two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses or Certifications: Valid Driver’s License. Admission to the practice of law in South Carolina. All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
