Position Description:
The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing construction equipment, fleet vehicles, and related machinery to support safe and efficient operations. Mechanics may be assigned to a company shop or field project and perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to minimize equipment downtime and maximize operational productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair construction equipment, fleet vehicles, and related machinery, including but not limited to:
- Excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, compactors, pavers, rollers
- Water trucks, dump trucks, service trucks, pickups, and light-duty fleet vehicles
- Crushers, conveyors, hot plants, generators, compressors, and other support equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks including oil changes and samples, filter replacements, lubrication, and system checks according to schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic issues using manual and computerized diagnostic tools.
- Complete repairs such as engine overhauls, transmission work, brake systems, hydraulic components, undercarriage systems, tires, tracks, and electrical systems.
- Perform field welding and cutting as necessary to complete repairs and minimize equipment downtime.
- Operate service trucks and mobile repair tools to perform field repairs on active construction sites.
- Operate forklifts, cranes, hoists, and other material handling equipment in accordance with company policies and safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs using paper or digital work orders.
- Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with company safety policies, OSHA/MSHA standards, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of tools, workspaces, and service trucks.
- Assist with equipment inspections prior to job mobilization or post-job teardown.
- Coordinate with purchaser to obtain needed parts and supplies.
- Handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Proactively communicate goals, purpose, and proposed changes to the supervisor to ensure alignment with company objectives.
- Cross-train with team members and perform additional duties as needed.
Work Environment:
Assigned to shop locations or deployed to field projects based on operational needs.
May work in well-equipped indoor facilities or outdoors at remote job sites in harsh weather conditions.
Standard work schedule may include overtime, nights, weekends, or emergency calls depending on project demands and equipment breakdowns.
Position Requirements:

Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred; vocational or technical training in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment repair preferred.
Experience maintaining and repairing construction equipment, fleet vehicles, diesel engines, or related mechanical systems preferred.
Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, and mechanical diagnostics appropriate to the position.
Valid driver's license with clean driving record required; CDL Class A or B preferred for field assignments or operation of service trucks.
Welding and fabrication skills are a plus.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, equipment diagrams, and repair instructions.
Ability to lift 50-75 lbs frequently and handle heavy tools or equipment components.
Frequent standing, bending, climbing, crawling, and working in awkward positions.
Ability to work from heights, in shop bays, or beneath heavy equipment safely.
Commitment to safety through continuous situational awareness, hazard recognition, and adherence to company safety policies and safe work practices.
Bilingual: fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish is a plus.
