Role Description: The Heavy Duty Diesel Technician is a full-time, on-site role based at LAV Truck Repair in Byron Center, MI. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing heavy-duty diesel trucks and related equipment, including engines, trailers, reefer units, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and suspension components. Daily tasks include performing routine preventative maintenance services, conducting diagnostic tests with appropriate tools and software, completing repair orders, and documenting work performed accurately. The technician will also assist with troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues, following safety procedures, and maintaining a clean, organized work area. Collaboration with service advisors and other technicians to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and provide clear explanations of repairs to support excellent customer service is expected.
Qualifications: Strong mechanical aptitude with experience working on heavy-duty diesel engines, drivetrains, and related systems. Ability to perform diagnostics using tools, equipment, and basic computer-based diagnostic software. Knowledge of brake, suspension, and steering systems and familiarity with standard repair procedures. Commitment to workplace safety, including proper use of tools, lifts, and personal protective equipment. Capability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins. Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced shop environment. High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in diesel technology or automotive repair is preferred. Prior experience as a diesel technician or mechanic in a truck or fleet repair setting is highly beneficial. Ability to lift and handle heavy parts and equipment and stand for extended periods as required by the job. Valid driver’s license; commercial driver’s license (CDL) is a plus.
