About the role

Covering Kentucky basketball for the Lexington Herald-Leader is a high-impact, high-visibility assignment at the heart of college sports journalism. This is not a traditional beat: you’ll be the go-to source for Big Blue Nation, breaking news and delivering in-depth, personality-driven coverage of the winningest program in men’s college basketball history. You’ll dig into the stories behind the box score—NIL, recruiting, the transfer portal and the business of the UK brand—while also capturing the culture, personalities and community impact that make Kentucky basketball a year-round obsession. You’ll work across formats, from rapid-turn breaking news to explanatory video, and connect with fans on every platform, from TikTok to live events. AI and automation will help you focus on what matters most: building sources, breaking stories and delivering journalism that sets the agenda for Kentucky sports. You’ll also pitch in on major events like the Kentucky Derby, keeping your reporting fresh and relevant all year. What sets this role apart: Own one of the most competitive and vital beats in college sports Combine relentless reporting with digital storytelling and audience engagement Use AI and automation to free up time for deeper journalism—never to replace your voice or judgment Reach fans wherever they are, with vertical video, social media and in-person events Be part of a collaborative, supportive newsroom that values experimentation and continuous learning
What you’ll bring: A college degree in journalism or equivalent experience
3-5 years of reporting experience, ideally in highly competitive environments Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and the ability to spot stories that matter Relentless reporting drive and a commitment to accuracy and ethics Experience building sources and using public records Comfort working nights, weekends and traveling for coverage Skill in shooting and appearing on video, plus a strong grasp of vertical and social-first formats Familiarity with Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram and emerging platforms Experience with AI tools and/or a willingness to experiment in that space A collaborative approach and eagerness to learn and adapt Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance Residency in Lexington-Fayette County If you’re ready to set the pace for Kentucky basketball coverage and thrive in a digital-first, audience-obsessed environment, we want to hear from you.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
