Medical Director – Publications Location: Boston, MA or New York, NY | Hybrid
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
We are seeking an experienced Medical Director to join a growing Medical Communications team. This position will take a leading role across scientific communications programs, with a particular focus on publications, while also providing opportunities to work across broader Medical Affairs initiatives. This is a hands-on role combining scientific strategy, content development, client leadership, team mentorship, and business development. The Medical Director will lead projects from planning through delivery while helping develop strong, long-term client partnerships.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and delivery of complex publication and Medical Communications programs
  • Provide strategic and scientific guidance to pharmaceutical and healthcare clients
  • Lead publication planning and execution across deliverables including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, congress materials, and scientific presentations
  • Develop and review high-quality scientific content, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency
  • Translate complex scientific and clinical data into compelling communications for appropriate audiences
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted scientific partner
  • Lead project teams and oversee timelines, quality, and successful delivery of client work
  • Review and provide constructive scientific feedback on work produced by other writers
  • Mentor and support the professional development of junior scientific team members
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Medical Communications and adjacent healthcare consulting disciplines
  • Contribute to business development, including proposal development, pitches, and identifying opportunities to expand existing client relationships
  • Stay current on relevant scientific developments and industry trends
Experience & Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years of professional publications experience within a Medical Communications/medical writing agency
  • Demonstrated experience leading publications accounts or programs
  • Strong background across publications deliverables, including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and congress materials
  • Degree or advanced qualification in a relevant scientific discipline
  • Excellent scientific writing, editing, and data presentation skills
  • Proven ability to develop and manage strong client relationships
  • Strong project and account leadership skills with the ability to oversee multiple priorities
  • Experience reviewing the work of other scientific writers and providing constructive feedback
  • Ability to contribute strategically to client accounts and identify opportunities for account growth
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Hybrid Working
This position can be based in either Boston, MA or New York, NY and follows a hybrid working model. Employees have flexibility to work remotely for up to approximately half of their working time, measured across a two-week period. Candidates should therefore be within reasonable commuting distance of either the Boston or New York City office and comfortable with regular in-person collaboration.
