Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Geostructural Design Engineer to support and lead the delivery of design services related to retaining walls, ground improvement, excavation support, slope stabilization, and deep foundations. The ideal candidate is a proactive engineer with strong technical acumen, communication skills, and a desire to collaborate across disciplines. This position offers direct client interaction, project ownership, and the opportunity to shape the development of a specialized service line within a multidisciplinary firm.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Master’s degree with a geotechnical/structural emphasis preferred
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
8 to 12 years in geotechnical, structural, or geostructural engineering with increasing responsibility
OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour construction safety (or ability to obtain); preferred training in construction inspection, slope stability, or deep foundation testing
Core Competencies:
Strong technical knowledge in retaining walls, excavation support systems, deep foundations, ground improvement, and slope stability
Effective verbal and written communication with clients, contractors, and colleagues
Highly organized with a commitment to meeting deadlines and delivering value
Practical problem solver with a focus on constructability, cost-effectiveness, and public safety
Technical proficiency and attention to detail to perform final reviews of drawing sets and calculation packages for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
Sound engineering judgment and relevant project experience to establish appropriate design parameters and select design approaches for complex geostructural projects
Ability to interpret and apply relevant codes, design standards, and project specifications
Curious and collaborative, with a growth mindset and attention to detail
Entrepreneurial mindset with a drive to take initiative, identify opportunities, and help grow a specialized service line within a dynamic, multidisciplinary firm
Proficient in geotechnical and structural design software (e.g., LPile, GROUP, RSPile, Snail Plus, Deep Ex, GEO5)
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership and Development Mentor junior staff on technical execution, design software, and field practices, providing constructive feedback to strengthen technical skills and engineering judgment
Support onboarding, training, and integration of new team members
Help build a geographically distributed, high-performing team through clear communication and shared technical standards
Act as a technical lead on projects, guiding staff and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders
Client Relationship Management Serve as a point of contact for assigned clients and projects, providing regular updates and addressing concerns
Participate in scoping meetings to align Geostructural solutions with client goals and establish clear scope, deliverables, and expectations
Represent BLE in a professional and responsive manner during field visits, presentations, and project discussions
Quality Control and Assurance Lead or contribute to internal QA/QC reviews of design calculations, drawings, and reports, ensuring review comments are addressed before issuance
Develop and enforce design standards and checklists for Geostructural work
Conduct field reviews and provide feedback to improve quality and constructability of deliverables
Project Planning and Scheduling Coordinate project tasks, milestones, and deliverables in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
Assist with estimating level of effort for scopes of work and proposals
Proactively monitor deadlines and workloads and communicate resource constraints or schedule risks early to ensure timely project completion
Risk Management and Compliance Identify geotechnical, structural, and contractual risks during planning and design phasesand communicate recommended mitigation measures to project leadership
Ensure designs meet applicable building codes, DOT requirements, and design standards
Oversee or support construction-phase QA/QC to verify adherence to design intent and promptly identify and communicate early deviations that could impact performance, safety, or liability
Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with BLE’s geotechnical, CMT, environmental, and civil engineering teams
Facilitate integration of subsurface data and geotechnical recommendations into constructible design solutions
Contribute to multi-disciplinary projects, helping resolve soil-structure interaction challenges early in the design process
Contracts and Vendor Management Provide input on scopes, deliverables, and technical specifications for subcontractors and specialty vendors
Review proposals and shop drawings from specialty contractors (e.g., ground improvement, anchors, micropiles)for consistency with project requirements and design intent
Support contract negotiation by clarifying design responsibilities and assumptions
Business Development Assist with proposal development, statements of qualifications, and pursuit strategy
Identify new opportunities with existing clients and support efforts to secure new clients
Develop marketing materials and technical content that highlight the Geostructural team’s value proposition
Performance Analytics Track project performance against scope, budget, schedule, and quality goals
Use post-project reviews to refine internal tools, templates, and design methods
Support team performance dashboards and metrics (e.g., backlog, proposal hit rate, QA issues)
