About the role
Custom Inspection Solutions (CIS) is growing, and we’re expanding our nationwide inspector network. CIS works with banks, lenders, fleet operators, private equity firms and other commercial clients that need independent, professional inspections of trucks, trailers, construction equipment, forklifts and other commercial assets. We are looking for experienced, mechanically knowledgeable inspectors who value flexibility and independence, but also take pride in doing the job right. This is not a traditional 9-to-5 position. Assignments are offered individually, and you can accept opportunities that fit your location, availability and capabilities. Many CIS projects involve larger fleets, multiple locations, or several days of inspection work. Proven inspectors who demonstrate quality, reliability and professionalism are the people we look to first when those opportunities become available. Why inspectors work with CISFlexible 1099 contractor opportunity Assignments that work with your schedule Paid weekly per inspection/project with rates established before accepting the assignment Opportunities ranging from individual local inspections to larger fleet and multi-day projects Larger fleet, multi-location, and multi-day projects are available to qualified and proven inspectors Assignments can complement an existing inspection business, technician role, retirement schedule or other independent work Straightforward inspection guidelines and support from the CIS team before questions arise No selling — your job is to objectively inspect, document and report what you find What you may inspect Depending on your qualifications and the individual assignment: Class 3–8 trucks and tractors Commercial trailers Construction and heavy equipment Forklifts and material-handling equipment Buses and specialty vehicles Fleet and transportation assets Golf Carts, Turf, and Agricultural equipment Other commercial equipment Inspection scopes may include photos, videos, functional checks, tire and brake measurements, fluid/leak checks, diagnostic scans, mileage/hours verification, and standardized condition reporting.
What we are looking for:
Ideal backgrounds include but are not limited to: Diesel technicians Commercial vehicle or DOT inspectors Fleet technicians or fleet maintenance professionals Heavy-equipment technicians Equipment appraisers Automotive or commercial inspection professionals Retired technicians or inspectors who want flexible project work Commercial vehicle or diesel experience is strongly preferred. Flexibility comes with responsibility We give our inspectors flexibility, but our clients rely on the quality of the information we provide. We expect inspectors to follow the assigned inspection guidelines, document findings accurately, communicate professionally, meet agreed timelines, and follow through on accepted assignments. For most commercial vehicle assignments, inspectors should have access to: Heavy-duty diagnostic scanner such as JPRO, Bosch, TEXA, Nexiq, or equivalent Tire tread gauge and basic measuring tools Tape measure and standard hand tools Standard PPE, including safety glasses, high-visibility vest, and work boots Smartphone/tablet with a good camera and reliable transportation Requirements vary by assignment, and we’re happy to discuss tools and acceptable alternatives with qualified inspectors. Inspectors who consistently deliver high-quality work are considered first for larger projects and recurring opportunities. This is an independent contractor / 1099 opportunity. Assignments and volume are not guaranteed and are offered on a project-by-project basis. Interested? Apply to join the CIS Inspector Network and tell us about your location, experience, certifications, tools, travel radius, and the types of equipment you are comfortable inspecting. Qualified applicants may be required to complete applicable background and driving-record screening. Good inspectors get assignments. Great inspectors become people we call when the big projects come in.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
