Overview: We're is seeking an experienced casualty underwriting professional to join our team as a Casualty Underwriting Manager. This is a subline subject-matter-expert role within the casualty line, owning technical oversight of our commercial auto program portfolio in support of the overall casualty strategy. The Manager provides day-to-day underwriting oversight of assigned launched programs, leads diligence and onboarding of pipeline opportunities within the subline, and serves as the underwriting authority on commercial auto coverage, pricing, and regulatory matters across the casualty book. Line-of-business focus: this role requires deep commercial auto expertise across trucking (including FMCSA regulatory requirements), auto dealers, and standard commercial auto, on both E&S and admitted paper. Candidates should be equally comfortable with long-haul and local trucking risks, dealer operations (garage liability, dealers open lot, garagekeepers), and standard business auto exposures, including admitted market filing, rating, and compliance requirements.
Core Responsibilities
Commercial Auto Portfolio: Own underwriting results for the commercial auto program portfolio, monitoring loss ratio, rate adequacy, and exposure trends against plan. Drive corrective action with MGA partners when performance deviates from plan, and manage remediation through to closure. Serve on the underwriting committee for subline matters and prepare portfolio analyses and planning materials for the commercial auto segment.
Technical Underwriting Authority: Exercise delegated underwriting authority for assigned programs and adjudicate MGA referrals outside delegated authority. Serve as the underwriting authority on trucking risks, including FMCSA regulatory requirements (operating authority, safety ratings, CSA/SMS data, ELD and hours-of-service rules), MCS-90 and state financial responsibility filings, zone rating, MVR and driver eligibility protocols, and telematics/camera underwriting requirements. Serve as the underwriting authority on auto dealer risks (garage liability, dealers open lot, garagekeepers legal liability, dealer plate/drive-away) and standard commercial auto (business auto, fleet, hired/non-owned auto) across E&S and admitted paper. Own the subline appetite framework, referral triggers, and underwriting guidelines, maintained on the company's baseline underwriting guidelines framework with current state deployment tables and authority documentation.
Program Development & Oversight: Lead triage and due diligence of pipeline commercial auto opportunities; assess partner underwriting discipline and guideline quality. Drive onboarding of approved programs through guideline finalization and authority documentation. Execute quarterly stewardship reviews, underwriting QA file audits, findings memos, and MGA remediation tracking. Uphold treaty and facultative reinsurance conformity, bordereaux, due diligence, QA, and ICFR documentation standards across assigned programs.
Product & Market Intelligence: Maintain forms, rating plans, and admitted filing adequacy for the subline in coordination with Actuarial, Legal/Compliance, filing vendors, and Ceded Reinsurance. Translate transportation tort trends, litigation funding and nuclear verdict developments, FMCSA rulemaking, and market shifts into appetite, guideline, and pricing recommendations. Prepare underwriting narratives, data packs, and reinsurer meeting materials for commercial auto placements. Build commercial auto bench strength across the casualty team through analyst mentoring, technical training, and documented underwriting practices.
Qualifications
Required Experience: 7+ years of commercial auto underwriting experience spanning trucking, auto dealers, and/or standard commercial auto, with working knowledge of FMCSA regulatory requirements. Experience underwriting commercial auto on both admitted and E&S paper, including admitted rating plans and filing requirements. Experience with delegated underwriting authority oversight, program business, or MGA/MGU relationships in U.S. commercial P&C.Working knowledge of both E&S and admitted market requirements, including surplus lines compliance considerations. Demonstrated experience with underwriting guidelines, referral protocols, and coverage form review.
