About the role

Postdoctoral Fellow (m/f/d) – Five-Year ERC Advanced Grant Institute of Transfusion Medicine The Project ERC Advanced Grant PROTECT | Project BYPASS Engineering Next-Generation Blood Products The Institute of Transfusion Medicine at University Medicine Greifswald is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral fellow for the BYPASS project within the ERC Advanced Grant PROTECT. We are looking for an independent scientist who wants to develop new biotechnology-based strategies for next-generation blood products while building a distinct scientific profile. The position is designed for the full five-year duration of the ERC Advanced Grant. The initial appointment is for one year, with continuation for the remaining grant period explicitly intended. The BYPASS Project The central question of BYPASS is: Can the surface structures of blood cells be engineered so that clinically relevant antibody-mediated reactions are avoided without compromising cellular function? To address this question, approaches from protein engineering, enzyme engineering, glycoengineering, synthetic biology and cell biology will be combined and further developed. The project is deliberately open as to which strategy will ultimately succeed. The aim is to create new biotechnology tools and generate mechanistic insight. The long-term goal is to develop blood products that can be used safely and effectively even in patients with complex immunisation. The programme spans engineering and preclinical testing through manufacturing, quality assurance and regulatory development. This is not a predefined work package. The position offers substantial scientific freedom to develop original concepts and to build an independent research profile within BYPASS.
Your Profile: We are looking for a scientifically creative and independent researcher who formulates new questions and tests unconventional solutions experimentally. PhD in biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, protein engineering, synthetic biology, biophysics or a related field A strong scientific track record appropriate to career stage, demonstrating quality, originality and independence Willingness to enter new scientific territory and develop new technological approaches with translational potential Prior experience in transfusion medicine is not required; expertise in transfusion medicine and regulatory development is available within the project environment. Strong expertise in one or more of the following areas is particularly welcome; expertise across all areas is not expected: Protein design and protein engineering Enzyme engineering and directed evolution Glycoengineering and cell-surface engineering Synthetic biology Computational protein design Structural biology and biophysics
What We Offer: Salary accordingto TV-L (classification E13 depending on personal qualifications) Substantial scientific freedom and clear responsibility for your own projects Access to modern scientific and technological infrastructure, established biobanks, clinical cohorts, and GMP and regulatory expertise Active involvement in national and international scientific collaborations Support in developing your own grant applications and subprojects, with opportunities to co-supervise doctoral researchers Universitätsmedizin Greifswald Janna Wunder Mitarbeiterin Recruiting Fleischmannstraße 8 17475 Greifswald Tel: 0160 6505314

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
